I just spent a week in Bali doing a fitness retreat in a small village about 30 minutes from Ubud. The local children were delighful and tried to teach me some Balinese.....got plenty of laughs at my efforts but it reminded me of the difficulties faced in learning a new language. Gave me pause for thought as I prepare for China.
The children also decided to teach me some local dancing on our final night celebrations where the local villagers join us for dinner, music and dancing. Had lots of fun trying to pick up the moves but fear I looked more like a baby elephant not a graceful balinese dancer!!! The locals enjoyed my efforts with much clapping and cheering - not sure if it was for encouragement or the humour factor!! Have added some photos to remind myself that joining in helps tremendously with developing relations with another culture.

I agree totally Jane. If I look foolish then so be it BUT at least I will have engaged with new people!!
katie, you're so right about joining in. How often do we miss opportunities to make connections with people because we're afraid we may look foolish?!
