Parents being a pain!!

Hey,

I'm hoping to get some advice from people who are overseas especially in Korea right now. My parents particularly my Dad is saying that if I go to Korea I will get killed because the North will attack - I know that is a risk but very unlikely to happen. He refuses to listen to anything I say about why I want to go abroad and I just don't know what to say to him. Has anyone else's parents been a pain like this?! My Mum is pretty supportive of me going because she understands and as she travelled when she was my age she thinks its good for me to go.

My Mum has tried to talk to my Dad about it but he doesn't listen to her either.

So yeah I'd like to hear people's experiences especially when you told your parents you were moving abroad :)

Hey, I'm in South Korea at the moment, and the thing I would say is that your chances of being a victim of a violent crime are FAR higher in the UK or US than they are in Korea. If you do want to allay your dad's fears a little and were happy to do it, you could teach outside Seoul. You have practically no chance of getting attacked by North Korea outside there. All foreign nationals would be evacuated as soon as any war started, and any first attack is incredibly likely to be on Seoul or somewhere like that. I left for Korea the day after the bombing of the island that happened last year. My parents were, understandably, a little nervous, although they didn't try and stop me from going.

South Korea is one of the safest places on earth, and a great place to work. Seriously show your dad the stats on violent crime in Korea, and then the ones on England and he will be begging you to go (although I'd leave out the traffic accident deaths if I were you, not that it is terrible over here, but I suspect that they are higher than Britain :P)

Yeah I have explained to him that North Korea has no allies and there are pretty strong defences in both South Korea and China from the US, Japan and China.

Hmm, hopefully he'll get over it. Haha, definitely won't tell him if I visit the DMZ!!

Thanks Steve for the advice :) I am going to go and if he doesn't like it then well he has a year to get over it ;) I really want to go abroad because I don't want to be wondering "what if I went", I want to tell my grandkids my amazing adventures all around the world teaching and doing some good!

I had one thing to say when I tried to convince my mum....

The American Army!

She was fairly happy after that! :)
