Hi guys, I hope all of your courses are going great :)
I just need some help and guidance on checkpoint 5 - question 8 (the lesson plan)
The tutor has told me I need to "explain how you teach meaning of the new target language phrases" and I'm really stuck. What does that mean?!
This is the first time that I am really stuck and it's really bugging me!

Drop me a line on robert9914@hotmail.com and I'll help you get through it. I passed mine first time and got good feedback that would have helped me a lot.

Chris - I want to teach in Asia first before exploring Eastern Europe and Latin America :)
Boyd - Thanks for the advice, I got it back today and passed it :)
hmmmmm it sounds like you need to ask the students some concept checks - this is a pretty important aspect of tefl it seems - and fair dos - i can remember our teacher asking if we understood, and of course we nodded! say your target language phrase is 'used to' - so you might ask someone if we are talking about the past, future, or present? or maybe 'was it a one off, or did i do it regularly' - maybe ask yourself these questions to make sure you understand the meaning of the structure first, then reverse that to come up with some questions to check that understanding.
actually thats the most important thing when doing these courses - i was really struggling on this very assignment - so i took a step back - i was trying to come up with a lesson plan for teaching comparitive adjectives - getting nowhere - so i forgot all about the actual lesson plan, and approached it from the point of view of actually teaching myself firstly how they work - its quite complicated, what with the syllables etc, so i thought i should actually get it right in my head firstly. Then i came up with a sortof phrase to help me remember. Once i actually understood what it all meant, and had a take home message for doing these comparitives, then i went back and the lesson plan came to me much more easily - i sortof pretended i was going to teach myself.
but anyway, yeah, make sure you understand the meaning yourself, and then go from there. Goodluck Sportsfans!
I would like to teach in Europe. I've been looking at places such as the Czech Republic, Spain and France.
How about you?
Yeah, the weekend bit was so much fun! Where do you want to teach?
I can't wait to start teaching :)
I signed up for the 140 hour combined. I'm currently on the last leg of the course (the video practice part).
Had the in-class last week, which was a neat experience. Looking forward to start applying for jobs soon so I can get out there and start teaching!
Thanks, I sent it back a few hours ago because I thought I'd cracked it!
The tutor said that it's not a grammar lesson so no explanation of the grammar is needed. I just said that I'd use realia and flashcards to elicit the phrases - drill them and then do a roleplay of the train station of buying tickets.
I have no idea if that's what they wanted but it's similar to what you said!!
How far along are you on your course?
Hey there,
First of all, congrats on making it this far! It sounds like all the tutor is looking for is that you outline the steps in which you plan to teach the target language.
For example, if you're teaching questions on how to ask for direction, such as:
"Where can you buy tickets?"
You might want to teach the structure:
Question word + modal auxiliary verb + subject + verb
Some teaching methods you can exploy to teach this is through drilling, both chorally and individually. Also, the visual/kinaesthetic learners may appreciate the use of flashcards or realia to strengthen word association (ie you might bring in a used ticket stub and hand it around to the class). For the auditory learner, you could bring in a voice recording of yourself reciting a common Public Announcement you might hear at the train station, then have the class listen for specific details about what the Public Annoucement was about (what time did they say the train is leaving the station?).
Hope this helps!
