In a few months, I will be off to Ecuador (hopefully). This will be my first time flying. I have a lot of stuff and I know I can't take it all with me (I wish I could).
What are the typical limits for the amount of luggage that the airlines allows? I have heard that the average is about 50 pounds but if that is true..then that wouldn't be much at all.
I was hoping to take all of my clothes, my desktop computer, and my TV at least. I have learned that electronics in Ecuador is quite expensive which is the reason why I would prefer to bring along my TV. It is a 32"...not sure if that would be acceptable.
I would love to hear your experiences and your advice.
Thanks in advance :)

Hey man... with most carriers, when you travel they allow you to check up to 2 bags with a max weight of 50 lbs each. You can also take a carry on. Just remember no liquids in the carry-on. I´m from Boston, and yes, I´m going to take the 120 hour course. I just wanted to make sure from what you said; Ecuador is generally safe from what you know?¿ I went on the state department website and they say some pretty horrible things about the country like Americans are targeted in homicides, armed robberies and kidnappings. Is this over exaggerated? By the way, can you accept my friend request?
Hey Kallen, where are you from? Im from the UK and have never had more than a 21kg weight allowance and 10kg for hand luggage. In Portugal I found a cheap shipping company as I had to fly with Ryanair and 10kg wasn't enough......I don't think it's just a question of just the weight - but also how long you want to have them for? The sound on my laptop went from just taking it on the plane with me! One little knock is all it takes.... And if you have fun I really don't think you'll be wanting to watch TV anyway!
My advice is, look at what you are bringing, you need to get it in a suitcase. The telly and the desktop are, realistically, unlikely to be possible to take on the airline. You either need to look at having them posted or buy a laptop which you could take as hand luggage.
Also, I don't know about you, but for me, to take all of my clothes abroad would be totally unrealistic. I'm hoping to go out to Korea for a year in October, and I am starting to think now about what I will need to take (I'm 5ft10 and have large feet, which is going to make it difficult to find clothes out there). You are unlikely to be able to fit your whole wardrobe in your suitcase. Take a good look at your clothes. I don't know what the weather is like in Ecuador (ie, does it get cold in the winter?). A good piece of advice I heard was to take stuff that layers, so you aren't taking separate summer clothes.
But yeah, in conclusion, take what you can, stick to the luggage limits (if you have something that you love, and you can't leave behind, if you can wear it or put it in a pocket, they don't weigh you! I used to do this with jeans, just wear 4 pairs for the aeroplane journey! Was only a 50 minute journey though!!) and if you can, post anything that will take you over that, by the slowest, cheapest route possible. Pack light :) You can probably buy most of the stuff you "need" over there!
Heya,
I'm a fairly seasoned flier (I come from the Channel Islands, and have been returning there by plane 3 times a year for the last 5 years as well as doing some slightly more long distance journeys) and let me tell you to make sure that you know the luggage restrictions on your ticket and to stick to them!! My advice is to get someone to post things if you ABSOLUTELY can't live without them. I do it nearly every time I go home, although it is not quite the same as posting stuff to Equador.
Airlines generally between 18kg and 30kg luggage limits, so you won't be able to take all of that. Most have a limit on how many different bags the 18-30kgs can be packed in as well. Read whatever ticket you buy carefully! If you are travelling internationally you will probably have about 25-30kgs to play with plus 10Kgs hand luggage as long as it is in one bag (this might change depending on the airline) which must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. I think this is between 55 and 65lbs for normal luggage and 22lbs for hand luggage. If you go over this (and they will weight the bags) they will charge you an AWFUL lot extra on your ticket. My sister was charged about £250 the first time she came back from uni for having a suitcase that was too heavy.
