Mayhem in Ecuador

In addition to the news media reports, there are things that were not being reported and/or explained that deserves some attentions:

Transportation systems (including airlines, buses) were greatly reduced or canceled.

Supermarkets, banks, and most commercial businesses were closed.

In Guayaquil, high school students were continuing with the riots. Throwing big rocks at car windows and at store windows, starting fires, and blocking off the streets to stop traffic.

Why were they rioting? So, they can have an excuse to start trouble and destroy property. After all, they were not attempting to harm the police.

In the coastal region, people were afraid to go outside (the streets here were are a ghost town)

In the highland region, people were outside demanding that the president take action against the police strike. (it is hard to keep these people in their homes)

Alix (the other TEFL teacher here in Ecuador) seems to be ok.

That sounds really scary Kallen - hope you're doing OK. Remember you can always get in touch with the US embassy if things get really hairy!
