I'm just starting Checkpoint 3 and am so confused with regard to concept questions.
The first question is 'Tanya is having her car repaired.' Am I right in thinking I should be asking my students questions that should only have a yes/no answer. Should I use the 5 w's - where, what, why, when, who? Do I have to think about the tense being in the present?
Would I be right with anything like this :
Why is Tanya's car being repaired?
Who is repairing Tanya's car?
Thanks. Juliet

Hello there,
Try to keep your language as simple as possible - you don't want to use grammar/vocabulary that's higher than what your students know. The problem is if you ask a question that requires a 'yes' or 'no' answer then your students may guess the answer - so you can't really determine if they do understand or not.
Concept questions should help you to see if your students understand what you have just taught them (e.g. 'I am watching TV' = you could ask ' Is this in the past? now? or in the future?').
When making concept questions (when you have a new language point you want to check that students understand) it's important to think about what you think they could possibly confuse the language with. For example if you teach 'pen' they could confuse it with 'pencil' so you might want to concept check 'What colour is it usually?'(blue or black). If you want to concept check 'I have been to Japan' you may want to ask 'Is this recent or a long time ago?'
I hope this has helped explain concept questions a little! Don't worry, it will become clearer what you need to check when you are teaching.
Good luck!
Emma
Hi Juliet
I'd say no, its best no to ask those questions as you don't know the answers to them. Well the first one is ok, the second one is a no in my opinion.
but you can ask:
is her car broke?
is her car working right now?
hope it helps, regards
Vanessa
