Ever since leaving my home country England I have realised that the world is so big and I want to explore as much of it as I can. I like to keep myself busy and meet many of the millions of people in this world! My interests are quite broad, from listening to music, playing guitar, badminton, football, hiking, being up high (even though I am terrified of heights!) and recently reading. I always like to try something new as I get bored doing the same thing day in and day out, that's not what life is about!
hey everyone! So I'm Nikki, or niks as everyone...

I honestly haven't seen many jobs advertised for Portugal so I'm not sure if they generally request you speak Portuguese..however the other English teachers I met there did and my students expected me to. Also despite being in a relatively big town, not many people spoke English - so it's more of a must than other countries I'd say.
Italy always has jobs available however and is much easier to get work in. It really depends on the employers and the place as to whether you will need Italian. Most schools don't expect it I'd say. Italian is however one of the easiest languages to pick up!

Hi there James!
Yes I've taught in Italy and Portugal...I loved both countries but honestly I prefer going further a field (like Japan and Egypt). You should get in contact with daisybeth about portuagal also....http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-chalkboard/daisybeth. Here's some info I gave her recently:
I taught in Oporto. The students were great, but expect the older teenagers to be a handful! You'll have to employ tactics to get them to do their homework, come to class on time, not use Portuguese in class (with higher levels). You might be asked to teach exam preparation classes....
...I would recommend researching on the internet schools and contact them directly. I haven't seen that many advertised on tefl.com or in the newspapers. You will find it's very competitive for jobs as many schools employ fluent Portuguese teachers. Also wages will be lower than you are used to and standard of accommodation is a lot lower than the rest of Europe so ask to see any 'free' accommodation first. If you want to find your own place it's best to look for a room, as if you get your own flat you will have to furnish it.
Also watch out for your employers evading tax! It's a good idea to do your own tax (green slips) as then you can claim back a rebate against all of your costs such as flat, transport and even food :-) Then you know that you are definitely contributing...
I could go on for ages about my teaching experiences, but I don't want to clog up your wall...let me know if you have any questions in particular...and also check out my blogs for interview tips and things to look out for when choosing jobs :-)
