I am now in Beijing!
I arrived yesterday morning at 9.30am China time, and we met the TTC people and got drinks etc at the airport then came to our hotel. We sorted visas out and rooms keys etc, then had the afternoon to ourselves. I was so tired so I went to bed, but others braved the metro and explored a bit, and went to Tiananmen Square. Lunch and dinner were good, a sort of buffet with rice and different dishes, lots of watermelon too! The hotel is nice, better than I was expecting, and there is free internet.
The plan for today is a campus tour and a welcome talk and then a welcome dinner tonight. Breakfast this morning was strange, noodles and rice for breakfast is just so unnatural! Though they did have other things too.
Some things worth noting:
1. It's cheap here: A 600ml bottle of Coke is 25p ish and a 600ml bottle of beer is 40p....
2. Squat toilets are weird, but not as bad as you might think... Though carrying toilet paper with you at all times is a necessity!
3. The weirdest thing is not being allowed to FLUSH said toilet paper... That's going to take some getting used to! One has to just put it in the bin!
Ciao for now,
Jess x
