South Korea

Hi everyone!

I just thought i would write a wee mini blog about my fist couple of weeks in Korea. I came here about two weeks ago and so far im having a great experience!

I was pretty damn nervous about coming on my own but it was either that or stay at home doing nothing so South Korea won!!

My nerves went sky high (excuse the pun) when i was on the plane! i was sitting between 2 big korean fellows who both decided to fall asleep ten minutes before i needed a bathroom break!!  A bit of poking, prodding and slight(ok, really hard..) shoving finally got the sumo wrestler wannabe to move! 10 hours later and i was finally in Korea! Customs and immigration were suprisingly very easy to get through so when i finally got my bag i went out to meet John( the very nice Korean man who was taking me to my new school). He told me a bit about Korea on the way and the two hour drive went by quite quickly!

My new home is now in Sannamdong, Cheongju! My Hagwon is realy nice! Its called GnB and as far as i know there are quite a few of them around! I have three Korean co workers and then we have a director!             My director couldnt be any nicer. She has taken me out for lunch 3 or 4 times and has even bought me wee gifts. The kids at the school are great! thy get so excited to see me that all you can hear is  "hawoooo jeeeeennaa teeechaaaaaa."

I was taken to the hospital the day after i got here and my only advice to anyone out there is not to pee when you get up that morning! Being handed a cup and told to go pee on command is extremely hard to do! Especially when the toilet they want you to use is a squatty (look it up in google images "korean toilet") - not nice, especially when i hadn't seen one in real life before!!         So half an hour later, with a gallon of water drunk i finally and embarrasingly gave my 'sample' to my director who took it smiling! We left after they took blood (you dont even feel it) measurements, x-ray, eye and hearing test!

My apartment is tiny but it has everything i need in it! My director organised it so that i have sky(meaning i can get atleast 10 english speaking channels and i have the internet installed to!!

My first weekend was spent camping with some people that i met here and last weekend we all went out for one of the boys birthdays! Strolling back to my apartment at 7 o clock in the morning after clubbing and going into a famous korean kareoke club worse for the wear did not help my resolve to go exploring the next day!!

Well thats me about covered a few aspects of the first couple of weeks! any questions, comments or anything in general give me a shout.

Oooh you're so lucky. You hear so many bad things about apartments, hagwons etc

Glad things are going well for you! :)

I will be making the journey to Korea in about three weeks. I am nervous, excited, scared and thrilled all at the same time! One of my biggest concerns is having enough money when I get there to get settled in and everything. Any advice on how much to bring, what to pack, etc?

Wow - i'm so incredibly jealous!! :)  that all sounds amazing-well done!!  South Korea is where i'd like to go i think; but pretty much like everyone else i was worried that i'd get dumped in a hole!  But your blog has made me much more confident about the whole thing!

And it's great that you're making friends so easily - that's another thing i was a bit concerned about; but then, i'm a chatterbox who will chat rubbish to anyone that'll listen, so hopefully i'd be fine!

just waiting on my course stuff to come through, and i'll get cracking!  Thanks so much for posting this blog - you've really put my mind at ease! :)

It sounds brill :) who did you go through to get the job? I've heard a lot of horror stories about hagwons but how do you find them?

I'm looking at South Korea but I'm not sure yet, how are you finding it?

Hey Jenna,
