Hi, I'm Jen, 31, from Michigan. I've finished the TEFL course, and I'm going to teach in China on the internship in August!
I've traveled quite a bit around the states, and spent about 4 months traveling around Southeast Asia a few years ago, mostly Thailand and Laos, and absolutely loved it! I love the whole experience of traveling, and want to see as much of the world as possible throughout my life.
I'm Clare (hello) and I'm teaching on the China Internship...
Hey guys. My name is Kaleigh and I'm from the...

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountI think I do have everything pretty much set. Plane ticket, visa, shots, hostels booked. I still have to buy travel insurance, and get some Chinese currency, which I might do right in the airport. Otherwise, I think I'm okay...other than packing.
I'm going to get a local phone too, with just the local sim card. How are you set?
hey jen,
ahh the cell situation haha. I think I'm just going to get a local phone with a sim card while im over there at one of the stores so i can get an international one and a chinese one. Other than that skype will mainly be my mode of communicating with the states. I cannot believe how close we are to leaving. Do you have everything all set?
Caley- That's a very positive attitude about the winter coat. :-) I'm actually hoping for younger students myself; they won't realize quite how nervous I am!
Vaish- I'm very nervous about teaching too. I like your idea about the Mandarin flashcards!
Can't wait to meet you guys!
Hey Jen, i arrive on 23rd August at 9am in the morning. I would definetly love to meet up with you whilst we're in Beijing to see your pictures and get some tips. After I finish teaching, I got a month to tour China and south East asia before i catch my flight to Perth from Singapore.
I'm nervous about teaching. I've never done it before and I don't know what to take with me apart from all the i-to-i modules and lesson plans. I am thinking of creating some flashcards in Mandarin to help me get around China.
I know! I am just dreading packing my winter coat - but hey its gotta be done and I will just think of it as a sweater! lol. Flashcards are a great idea - I will probably take that idea and buy some too! I requested the oldest age group and then lower from there - I would love to teach the older ages but most of us will be teaching elementary I think - fingers crossed!
Hey Caley,
I have all the i-to-i materials saved to a flash drive. I thought about printing them, but didn't want to have to lug all that around in my backpack. I've also thought about picking up a couple of workbooks and/or flashcards and such. It's hard not knowing what ages and levels we'll have!! (Not to mention not even knowing what part of China we'll be in to know what clothes to pack!!)
Hey Jen, Nice to hear from you. For teaching materials I just took all the lessons we did through TEFL and copy and pasted them into a word document and printed them. That way I had a bunch of lesson ideas on hand. I also have the Grammar Book and Lesson Plan books from i-to-i (I received them for free a few years ago when I did my 40hr course). I bought a few kids books (all different levels) so that I may use them in lessons and hopefully be able to leave them at the schools for the kids. I am not stressing on lesson plans right now because I don't know what level, age, or type of lessons I will be giving. If they throw a lot at me at once in the first couple of days well I will just breathe and dive in! lol. Hope everything is going well for you! TTYL
Caley
I really loved Laos, unfortunately missed out on Vietnam and Cambodia that time but would definitely love to go! On the other hand, I've got friends in Russia and Eastern Europe I'd like to visit as well, so who knows?? :-) Hopefully we can meet up in Beijing and we could talk about Thailand and Laos! I could show you some pics and tell you about some of my faves. When do you arrive?
Hey Jen, thanks for the ad. I am also hoping some money comes your way... and I'm sure it will :) I'm planning on goinng to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam after the internship - any tips you can provide would be awesome. If money does come your way, where would you travel to next???
Hi Helene!
Wow, how lucky for her!! :-) That's awesome.
Yes, I had heard that about various websites too. I'm slowly turning all of my friends and family to skype as well, even my Grandma!! :-P
It's getting so close now!!!!! Eeeeek! :)
