Gist Questions?!

These type of questions always confuse me...I can never get them from...I mean create them from paragraphs for the students. I have spent nearly two months on Checkpoint 4; questions 2, 6 and 10. It is a shame that this is my last attempt at the checkpoint; I wonder if it will be okay?!

Oh brillant, many thanks Briona. That helped a lot!

Hi there,

Gist questions relate to the main topic/theme rather than details and are used to check students' general understanding of a text.

Have a look at this article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18073793) taken from the BBC News website. It's about shortage of funding for healthcare in Greece and the effect this is having on patients' ability to pay. A possible gist question could relate to the headline, e.g., why are hospitals tightening payment rules? Students don't need to read further than the first paragraph to find the answer (shortage of funding plus no entitlement to free healthcare = inability to pay).

Detailed/comprehension questions focus (unsurprisingly) on details within the article. They require students to look for specific pieces of information. A sample detailed/comprehension question might be: what was the hospital's response when Anna told them that she couldn't pay for her C-section? Students need to read a few paragraphs to find the answer (they threatened to keep hold of her baby until she could pay).

Hope that helps.

Briona
