Hi! I'm planning a career break after 15 years working in the television production industry, and have just signed up for the 120-hour combined TEFL/TESOL course.
I've spent a lot of time in Africa and would love to teach there, but Central and South America also appeal. I've got an open mind at this stage and hope that being part of the TEFL community here will inform and inspire my future choices...

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountHi Jeanie, You may have already discovered this but I just saw that under Groups, under Africa, there's a blurb about a company through whom you can volunteer teach in Africa. The company doesn't even require you to have TEFL certification. Thought you may want to know since it may be another way to get some exeperience.... Here's the link to the company's website: http://www.projects-abroad.co.uk/volunteer-projects/teaching/south-africa/?gclid=CNao3MPCzqACFYsqDgod6Vsxzw
Kate.
Yes, I like the fact that on the internship your room and board is looked after for you.... so you can concentrate on the teaching part to get your feet wet, and at the end at least have some work experience to put on your resume.
I don't have a university degree, plus I'd like to work in orphanages in Africa - which I undersand is mostly done on a volunteer basis - so I may not get to be in Africa at all. I'm thinking of at least doing a volunteering stint there after the internship before seeking a paying job doing TEFL... I'm keeping my options wide open ath this point.
Did you live in Africa as a child, or were you working there as an adult? My ex just came back from a month in Liberia, and we had friends who lived in Sudan years ago. Such a diverse continent with so many needs.
Hi Kate, nice to "meet you"! Yes I did complete the Online Course quite quickly, but I had done the 20-hour practical Weekend Course first (the weekend immediately before) and I found a lot of what I learnt there very useful when it came to doing the online stuff eg lesson planning etc.
Would love to keep in touch re Africa, and I'm interested that you've first chosen to do an internship somewhere else before heading that way. I'm thinking that's maybe what I should do too, just to ease myself into the whole TEFL thing gently and get some experience/confidence under my belt first. Ultimately Africa's my goal, as I've already spent time there (mainly in Southern Africa) and would love to be able to teach there as I think it would be incredibly rewarding.
Looking forward to hearing about your China experience - good luck getting your passport in time!
Jeanie
Jeanie, It looks like you completed the 120hr online course in 14 days - from March 7 to March21 - and while working full-time.... Is that true?!!! I haven't started it yet, but I can't imagine getting it done in 14 days! Anyway, I see your first choice is Africa. Same with me, so I'd be interested in staying in touch to see how you make out. I'm due to go on the China internship in August (provided my passport arrives in enough time to allow me to complete my app process!), but after that I do think I"d like to head to Africa, if at all possible. BTW, as a child I lived in Australia: Townsville, Gladstone, Brisbane, and Dampier. LOVED IT. Kate.
Cool - glad the weekend course inspired you! Certainly chat to those guys and if you need any more advice feel free to give me a shout :)
Hey thanks very much for inviting me in, Honor! I've just finished the 20-hour Weekend TEFL Course in Melbourne, which was brilliant - so now I'm truly inspired to make things happen! Next for me is the online course, but in the meantime I will definitely talk to the guys you suggest re opportunities in South America. So many avenues to explore...
Hey Jeanie,
Welcome to Chalkboard and congratulations on deciding to take a career break - take it you're looking forward to it?! In terms of where to teach you'll probably have more luck finding paid work in South America, as the majority of positions in Africa are voluntary. You might want to chat to these guys who are teaching in South America at the minute to see if they've got any advice:
