Big Problem! Need Help!

I am currently doing the Grammar Awareness Assessment. On my first attempt i did it all by myself and got every question correct except for the very last point on 'The school was founded in 2002'. I put 'A completed action at a specified time in the past' and was marked wrong. This is the tutors comments -

In (iv) the function is incorrect. Why is the passive voice used here instead of the active voice?

Compare:

They founded the school in 2002 - active

The school was founded in 2002 - passive

Well done overall - you just need to redo this last answer.

Best Wishes

So i went back through the modules, Present and Past Simple Tense Functions and The Active and Passive Voices, now going by the tutors comments i concluded that the only other possible answer could be a 'past state'. So that is the answer that i gave for my second attempt, but it was also marked incorrect, and to make things even worse, there was no feedback left!!! Nothing at all! Not even a word.

So now, this time i have been searching the internet for answers, and i am completely godsmacked! I have now discovered that other people have given the same answers as me, and they were marked correct!!! How is this possible?

I am really upset and have no idea what to do. I don't have another answer. I just feel like writing 'i have no idea' for my final attempt.

So anyway, i am not asking for an answer, i just hoping that someone will be able to shed some light on my situation. Any help will be so very much appreciated. A gentle push in the right direction would be so helpfull.

Many thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Oh yeah. And don't say "use the passive voice". As my Tefl teacher said, that might be like saying "use the marsbar". Doesn't mean anything :-)

Just saw this post while browsing but it's 2 days ago. Did you try again? Check out my posts for some help - I haven't given the answer but close enough! But my own quest for help on this (in the Ask a TEFL expert forum by accident) resulting in me figuring out the answer on my own.

Ignore the Internet searches. There is a certain amount of messing and fibbing going on and you will be completely misled. In essence it comes down to NOT using a canned answer from the list in quiz 50. Which is kinda hard given that that's what you have been doing in the course so far. Remember that you are talking to a person not a computer. And that person pretty much told you what the answer was!

Simply explain what the function of "was founded" is like you were explaining it to a child. Imagine if you posed the question:
"use the verb 'to found' in a sentence".
Will the answer be: "Bob founded the school in 2002"? If so, how can you rephrase the question to get the right answer? Read the module on the passive voice very very closely. Hope this helps you...
