Eaten by Brownies????

Hmm, I've decided that I don't have nearly enough experience with Children, especially as I've specified 6-12 year old's as my first choice age group for teaching in China.  Now I know we won't necessarily get our first choice but its worth being prepared for all eventualities and I'm reasonably confident when it comes to teaching older learners (aged 16+ anyway).

So call me bonkers, but I've decided to make the most of my spare time between now and August and I've just volunteered to help out at a local Brownie pack until the summer.  I start next Wednesday . . . will I be eaten alive?

Now if I can just remember where I left my coloured card, glitter and the pritt stick . . . or should that be first aid kit, fire kindling and billy can?  What do Brownies get up to these days?

Hi Jane, so pleased that all went well with the Brownies.;...and you didn't get eaten alive!!!!

Cheers, Kate.

Had a fantastic time with the Brownies - they were so adorable!  They'd all made me thank you cards because the week before I'd donated a box of arts/crafts stuff to them.

Last week they were all working towards their Travel Badge, so I was helping them to make their own passports (not sure what the Passport & Identity people would say about that!).  They also had to be tested on their ability to say 'hello', 'goodbye', 'thank you' and count from 1-10 in another language.  Then we all went outside to cook 'dampers' on the Bar-b-q so that they had all experienced food from another country.  Thankfully I managed to avoid sampling this 'traditional' Aussie dish - not quite brave enough to sample food created by grubby, 7-year old hands yet!

Hi Jane, that sounds like a really good idea, I've applied to teach kindergarten on the August China Internship so may look into doing something similar - I have 4 younger brothers and sisters but all they're currently giving me experience in is moody teenagers!! Let us know how you get on with the kids!

Oh Jane!!! Just like me- quite comfortable teeaching adults but not sure about children even though I've had 2 of my own!!!!. I did a couple of classes in Vietnam last year of tiny children and it was damn hard work!!! Their energy seemed to be endless. Anyway I figure this is meant to be a challenge so I'll go with the flow......anklebiters or not!!!

Good luck with the Brownies. Thats a good idea but how you find the time beats me!!

Cheers, Kate.

That's a good idea, I'll see if I can contact the ones near to me and arrange to observe a teacher for a day.  Thanks!

It's also quite useful to get some experience in a Primary School for a couple of days or even High School just in case you get older students to teach. You can observe the teachers, pick up some ideas and tips and also get some hands on experience with school life.
