Hey
My name is Ian Reddish and I am from a town called Chesterfield just off junction 29 of the M1 in North East Derbyshire.
I have been working for the Derbyshire County Council for the past 6 years but have become tired of life in the office and have often wondered what I can do with myself. A colleague of mine suggested TEFL as a way of getting out in the world and doing a worthwhile job at the same time. As a result of this advice I booked myself on a TEFL weekend course and am now doing the online course. Going to be starting a placement in Bogor, Indonesia in April 2010 hoping to make a good impression and see what my future holds.
I suppose having a reasonable grasp of Spanish I would like to end up in Spain and maybe a South American country eventually but for now I am happy to learn new skills and see what is round the corner.
Your source of all TEFL-related information... If you're thinking...

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountYeah, There are plenty of gyms both local and big name such as Celebrity Fitness and Golds, if you join the big names you will pay western prices, They do often offer free 7/14/30 day trials from time to time so if you go and ask you can get a free membership to try it then quit and join a cheaper gym, thats what I'm doing right now! haha
As for food, there are plenty of options and its not all spicy, you can also get western food but again the price is higher example a Big Mac meal will cost around $4. If you do enjoy a Maccy D's after a drinking session at home call 14045 for home delivery and yes they do speak English! haha
If you budget well you can eat the local food and there are some tasty options such as Gado Gado, Ketoprak, nasi pecil, Cap Cay (trad. salad, similar to gado, rice with vegetables, fried vegetables in a sauce) if you don't want it spicy say Tidak Pedas.
Don't be nervous teaching is fun and not so hard if you get some good classes, Once you have taught for a few months you might get classes requesting you, thats happened to me lots of times because they like you and that makes teaching them sooooooo easy!!!!
I noticed on Candice's profile you said a friend is coming to Jakarta, do you know which school he will be at?
Hi Ian,
I know 'Freddies' That was my high school until I left South Normanton for the Sunny climbs of Gainsborough, Lincs with my mum. Bogor is very nice although you have to find your own place and the salary is less, there is more to do in Bogor such as the botanical gardens and the safari park all pretty close! If you need any tips or advice then let me know!
Hi Ian
YAY another brave soul venturing out to Indonesia! I know how you feel hey, trying to fight back the fears now that it's become real! I leave in March so i'll definitely keep you updated on how things are going.
Hope to meet you! Don't be too nervous... I think you'll adjust pretty easily considering it's not your first job (it's mine, eek!!)
Keep well
