China Internship Accommodation: What to Expect

It's one of the main questions we get asked when it comes to the China internship - where the hell will I be living? Now, the accommodation you get won't be the Ritz - you could be faced with slightly ageing kitchen appliances, unattractive furniture and *shock, horror* perhaps even a squat toilet.

Anyway, onto the bit you really want: the pictures! These are some of the apartments the current batch of interns are staying in - some are a little untidy - mucky pups...

Wet rooms are really common in China - so you don't have a shower curtain and the water just drains away in the corner.

The dreaded squat loos! You get used to them, promise!

If any of you current China interns out there have any pictures of their pads, feel free to post them in the China internship group!

Somebody said that 'what foreign teachers get, most Chinese can't dream of..'

From my experience... most Chinese people wouldn't set foot in the holes foreign teachers get offered.

This is a nice little apartment. I hope mine is like this! Dread the toilet though. I'm supposed to be getting a 'western style toilet' so fingers crossed.

This is pretty decent...

Actually, apart from the squat toilets, which I thought was a thing of the past, these apartments are some of the best I've seen in China. What school arrange for foreign teachers are usually a lot better than what the locals can even dream of. I have seen and lived in a lot worse during my years in China. I do agree that moving to live in China is a bit like going back a couple of decades in time, and that it definitely takes a little getting used to. Once you settle though you will find that life there is a lot more fulfilling if you have a decent paying job like the ones you have (some might disagree I'm sure). There are generally a lot more fun to be had without getting drunk and a lot of beautiful places to visit.

Nothing a little javex won't fix!  And, hey, who expects perfection on an adventure?

Agreed, much better than I expected :) *phew!*

This looks better than I expected. I'm going to China on the intenship in August 2010

The hole in the floor isn't that bad. I had to use on every day for a year in France and you get used to it. I'm due to go to China August 2010 so feel free to add me as a friend!

I agree, not bad. Definitly better than some student digs i've seen! Although the toilet would definitly take some getting used to!

Aw, sorry no one came to say hi to you Rozel and that your room didn't get it's chance to shine! Sure it's lovely :)

Some of the pics of the apartments were quite hilarious due to the mess they were in - these are the tidy ones! One unnamed intern's kitchen was like a sea of empty crisp packets and pop bottles - so these aren't the most shameful! Didn't realise no notice was given (sorry for any intrusion guys) - figured though it would have been a bit harsh ordering you to tidy up - much better to have a realistic portrayl of life on the internship, eh...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!! Martha your bedroom is SO messy! Love that I recognise most of the pictures here from my friends' apartments here in Zhongshan/Sanxiang! For the record, i-to-i gave them no notice before arriving, so no chance to tidy up first! (plus they came to visit my school and didn't even say hi to me! ha! My room would have been tidy...)

Yeah, accommodation is far from luxury - we have wooden furniture to uncomfortably watch TV on. Our kitchen has a sink - but it isn't plumbed in...so we do our washing up in the bathroom which isn't terribly practical but needs must. But on the whole we are happy and cosy here with our cockroaches (there aren't that many...) We do at least have a western loo! Everyone I know who had any accommodation problems got them sorted pretty quick - and we had our place cleaned cos it was so filthy when we arrived. The school sorted us out with a new kettle, microwave and basics such as cleaning prodcts and lamps and batteries for the clock when we asked, they have been really great.

I think the main thing that makes or breaks where you are living is the people you are with - I am lucky to be sharing with 3 really great girls, so any little apartment quirks are shared. Being on your own somewhere and having to deal with issues wouldn't be much fun. Well done to those out there who are managing!

Not bad at all, I've lived in a lot worse (even in England :P)
