I have a question for you all :)
In your opinion, what makes a good teacher?
It's as simple as that. I'm just curious to hear from you all around the world and get some ideas together.
Thank you!
Katie

Hi Alix! You can never have too many good qualities I'd say! Great suggestions there, I agree wholeheartedly about point 2, I remember a lesson I was so excited in a primary school in the UK here. The science lesson was based around displacement I believe. I remember I had so much planned for the lesson and thought to myself 'this is a stonker of a lesson, this is going to go so well' and it nosedived. So disappointed...but I ploughed on, abandoned the original lesson and 'winged' it! Hurrah!
One of the experiments involved melting chocolate so I came back to that later when they'd all left the classroom :) tee hee
Hi Steve! I totally agree - mutual respect is so so important in a classroom environment! Reading your thoughts below, you are definitely on the right path and it suits you! Good luck with everything!
Katie :)
Hi this is Steve, My answer may not be correct, but I will give you my thoughts on the question.
I believe a good teacher encourages learning and creates an enviroment which facilitates learning, whether you are teaching one-on-one or a group. the first step is to develop a sense of mutual respect.
1. A sense of mutual respect between the teacher and the students, is created by recognising that the teacher has certain skills and knowledge, so does each student.
2. A good teacher knows their subject. teachers who know their subject make clearer presentations, they can answer students questions effectively without being vague and evasive.
3. Can teach for transfer. They show how learning in one situation can be transfered to another situation.
4. Are well organised and give clear presentation. They have materials and the lesson well organised, so it is easy to follow, and makes sense. clear presentations and explanations facilitate learning.
5. Are good communicators. They take time to listen and respond to students. they write clearly and speak clearly, and their body language matches their message.
6. Can motivate learners. have the ability to arouse interest right from the start, and maintain that interest through a combination of methods, resources and activities.
Personally i think if you love to teach, then you can be a good teacher, and if i am wrong in my answer, then let me know, I love to learn. Steve
u r very good heart lady! thanks for your comment, lord bless u!
1. obviously, good people skills - be good at listening, understand what your students are trying to say, give them plenty of attention and talking time, whilst guiding the class in the way you want.
2. imagination and flexibility, create an interesting lesson plan, but be prepared to throw it in the bin and ad lib if it turns out to be less interesting to the students than it is to you.
3. energy and enthusiasm, the students really pick up on it
4. give individual attention to all students as necessary. the weaker ones respond better if they know you care about their development, but don't ignore the strong ones or they;ll be bored and left out.
5. attention to detail - don't get caught out on grammar points!
6. patience! you'll need it!
7. ability and willingness to spend time planning lessons properly. don't bitch about not getting paid for it! that's teaching for you.
is that too many things?
