10 Crazy Poland Facts

So, you might not know that much about Poland apart from there is lots of cabbage stew on offer and countless castles (oh, and vodka too!), to give you an insight into Polish culture here are 10 random facts:

1- Pizza in Poland does not contain tomato sauce. Instead the waiters bring sauce to the table and you pour it on top – so it’s just ketchup then?!

2- Geographically, Poland is not in Eastern Europe. It is in the very centre of Europe.

3- Some Polish beer is ten per-cent alcohol.

4- The Wieliczka Salt Mine is believed to be the 14th-oldest company in the world which is still in operation.

5- It is not uncommon for some English teachers to earn more than doctors.

6- Poles always carry cut flowers upside down.

7- The biggest section of any grocery store in Poland is the candy section.

8- According to the old Polish tradition, on arrival a welcome guest is offered bread and salt. Bread signifies trust and salt - endurance. In old times, salt was as expensive as gold and in great demand, like friendship.

9- The most popular name for a dog in Poland is Burek (meaning a brownish-grey colour) – what a dull name!
