The Key to Working Abroad After University

If you’re still stuck at home twiddling your thumbs after graduation, checking your inbox every five minute for job offers, we might just have an solution for you.

While the graduate job market in the UK is still on the ropes due to the recession, there’s huge demand for native English speaking graduates (that’s you!) to teach English abroad. The key is your TEFL certificate

Any fluent English speaker can train to become a TEFL teacher and head overseas. Fact. While you can get TEFL certified in as little as one weekend, more study is recommended to get your hands on the best TEFL jobs. Comprehensive TEFL courses with reputable providers such as i-to-i, which are recommended if you have no previous teaching experience, are completed through a mixture of classroom and online learning. As the majority of learning is done online it’s totally flexible: you can study whenever you want and wherever there’s an internet connection. Courses start from as little as £143, while you can get comprehensively certified for just £369.

But I don’t speak another language or have any teaching experience!

You don’t need to! Schools abroad want you to create an English-speaking atmosphere for your students, which means the local language is usually not allowed in the classroom. Your TEFL course will train you to be able to communicate with your students and develop activities to get them speaking. And as for teaching experience, there’s no need. The demand for teachers is so huge that employers will want you even if you’ve never stepped foot in a classroom before!

So, where can I go?

Pretty much anywhere really – China and Japan are both really popular destinations for UK graduates, but the world is your oyster. You can teach in almost any country where English is not the first language, so no matter whether you want to head to Asia, Europe or Latin America, there are opportunities out there. Check out sites like www.tefl.com for job vacancies and to get an idea of where you could be working.

This all sounds a bit scary – are there any supported programs I can take part in?

You’re not wrong – while taking on a new job, house and country all at once is exhilarating, it can be a little daunting. So, if you feel you need a bit of extra support in your first TEFL experience, there’s always the option to do a paid teaching internship in either China or Thailand. You’ll get full training, an in-depth orientation when you arrive in-country, 24-hour support and the reassurance of having everything, including accommodation, arranged for you.
