OK, so most of the year, monkeys in the ancient city of Lop Buri, Thailand, look a little bit like this – despite having the run of ancient Khmer temples, the adoration of tourists and power cables galore to swing on, there is simply nothing to do…

That is until big ears above and his 599 monkey mates are invited to their very own feast/tea party every November, thrown by a local hotelier to thank the monkeys for bringing tourists and good fortune to the town. Over three tonnes of fruit, sweets and other goodies are delivered to the town’s two sacred sites, Sam Prang Yod and San Pra Kan, which the monkeys call home. Check out the carnage:
And it’s not only financial benefits these mischievous critters bring – they’re also pretty handy for the soul. Donating food to them racks up good karma, ensuring a spot in the highest level of Buddhist heaven.
If you’re after a spot of good karma, you can head to Lopburi in October on the Teach in Thailand Internship – you’ll spend five incredible months teaching, with full training, 24-hour support, everything pre-arranged and a comprehensive orientation in Bangkok, not to mention the chance to join in with the world’s biggest monkey tea party. Get all the details here: http://www.onlinetefl.com/teaching-internships/thailand-lopburi/
So, who’s up for the monkey tea party?
