Anyone know of any Asians who have taught anywhere in Asia? I am Korean/American, but was adopted by Caucasians so I don't speak Korean. I have heard that I probably wouldn't be respected if I taught in Korea. I was also rejected from placement in Thailand and am wondering if this has to do with my skin color. I was looking for other Thailand jobs online and one job positng said "skin color: white" under requirements. Is there some place I would be able to teach!!??? This is very disturbing to me. |

yeah, I'm thinking the same thing too! I'm a british born chinese, and I want to teach in asia as well. But after you brought this topic up, it makes me wonder if I can actually do it?? |

Hi! I have met many Korean Americans teaching out here. I am in Cheongju, Korea, and they all speak varying levels of Korean (from none to good, none I have met are fluent though). I also know two black teachers here, and I met one on the subway in Seoul. I am not going to lie, it does effect things, but get yourself a good recruiter, and make sure you are willing to wait a bit. Another thing that I have found is that a lot of them are in the EPIK program, where it doesn't matter so much what you look like, as you won't really be used to publicise the school so much. They take people in March and October (you just missed the start of term I'm afraid). It is definitely worth looking in to. If you want, I can recommend my recruiter, who is very personal (he lives in Cheongju) and will make the effort to find you a job (I know he has placed a black giirl in the past, as his wife, who is Korean, was saying she was shocked at how difficult it could be). |

Thanks mahalath! I've been wanting to apply to the EPIK program but wasn't sure, but after seeing your post, I think I will! |

I am thinking I might have a better chance in a more culturally diverse country like Brazil. |

No problem! I wish you both the best of luck :) (and Korea is amazing! If you need any help, let me know :)) |

Hey.. Thanks for the information and advice! :) I am Indian and was wondering if any of you have met an Indian muslim teaching in Asia..

I haven't currently, but this is probably more of a visa issue than anything else. There are plenty of Indians in Korea, but you cannot get an E visa without a passport from USA, Canada, Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand. I have met one girl who I think was of Indian decent but wasn't a Muslim and held an American passport. |
