Hiya everyone! This is my first post in the Thailand group of Chalkboard. Though it's about time for me to connect with those already or will be heading out to Thailand. Am going to be teaching at Surat Thani (which is like the travellers' hub to Koh Samui and Koh Tao). Am getting so excited about it but also apprehensive as I shall also be teaching drama. Are any of you based out in Surat Thani or nearby? Or have you been there? What is it like? Please do let me know as would love to start making friends if you are especially based out there! S |

Hi Sandy, I haven't stayed in Surat Thani but I did travel through there on my way from Bangkok to Koh Samui. Beware if you take the train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, the train stop is actually in outlying Phun Phin which is about 30 minutes from Surat Thani. Also, the train stop is just that, a stop, NOT a station, so don't expect any luxuries upon arrival except a 24-hour internet cafe, a 7/11 convenience store and a bunch of guys trying to convince you to take their tour bus packages to wherever you're final destination may be... I hope you have a great experience teaching in Surat Thani! When do you depart? Best, Kim |

Hi Kim, Thanks for sharing that. Am due to be at Surat Thani for the last week of April but will be flying in from Hong Kong and being picked up from my school. Have heard horror story about the trains plus I suffer from really bad travel sickness unless I am driving so will have to be a bit snobby and stick with the more luxurious travel methods to save my stomach! I have never been to Koh Samui. What were you up to over there? S |
