Many schools require chinese, most don't.

It's always good to learn, but the short answer is no, you definitely don't need to speak Chinese to get a job.

You don't need to speak Chinese to get a job, but it will help you to get around China :).

If you actually want to learn and you apply yourself, you will be surprised how quickly you pick it up. I have only been teaching there since the start of 2011, but already I am pretty good (only studied for a few months before hand). Living there is definitely the best way to learn!

Well, I only know a little Chinese (I'm currently learning), but I can get around find. I could easily get around with no Chinese at all! It's just useful to get things done quicker. It might be important for you to have a Chinese connection who can text you addresses in Chinese to show taxi drivers though!!

Speaking Chinese will definitely help you enjoy and cope with China, but for getting a job it isn't necessary.

in the classroom the schools prefer you not to use any chinese as the entire lesson is designed to be ran in full English. In most cases.

Speaking Chinese is definitely not necessary. In the classroom you are expected to speak entirely in English - setting a good example for your students. In daily life it could be useful for getting things done quicker with older people- although the Chinese do have certain ways of doing things and the language barrier doesn't seem to make any difference when it suits them.

I have been here over 2 years and have not mastered the language. I can read, write and speak a little but not nearly enough to get by with. I often resort to gestures and drawings which can result in a lot more fun communicating!!!!
