I am on question 34 and i know what i want to say but cant quite formulate how to say

the question is :

Please look at the student mistakes below and do the following:

  1. Identify what is wrong with the sentence

  2. Write what probably caused the mistake

  3. Identify what type of a mistake it is

  4. Write how you would correct it.

(Note: These are all spoken mistakes. The level of the learner is written next to the sentence).

The people was very kind (Pre Intermediate)

so far i have that thay have used the wrong plural and how to formulate a sentence using that plural

if the student means person the "was" is fine and this is easy enough to correct, but if they mean "people" how do you explain how and when to use "were"?

i hope someone can help

If they mean people they're using the wrong form of the verb - so the singular form not the plural form. In terms of what might have caused the mistake it'd be a difficulty understanding the conjugation of verbs (in some languages the singular and plural use the same form of the verb). In terms of correcting it, you could just drill the verbs or demonstrate using flash cards with a person or people on them.

Hope that helps!

Hello!! I am also on checkpoint 3 and can't seem to get the answer for question 6:

6

What grammatical structure is being taught?

Answer:

‘Present Simple’ was elicited as an introduction to the lesson, this was used as a lead in to contrast the ‘Past simple’ that was being taught.

But i've gotten it wrong twice now!! Please help

Yes, the problem is that many students think:

  • if there is an 's' at the end of the word eg. 'The camels were big' it is plural (so use 'were'),

  • and if there isn't an 's' it's singular 'The camel was big' (so they use 'was').

However some plural words are irregular and don't have an 's'.  Unfortunately they have to learn the irregular words - there isn't a rule as such to spot them!

ddurong:

It's a little more difficult as it's a grammatical structure that doesn't have a specific name - so you just need to say what he is teaching.  Tip:  he writes it up on the board!
