Teaching functional language means teaching phrases that are 'ready to use' rather than grammar . Teaching things like 'how are you' 'What's your name' without explaining all the tenses, verb structures, adjectives, nouns etc.  Pick 4 or 5 phrases for your student to learn 'parrot fashion' and explain them by putting them in context, so that he understands when and where to use them.
