Look at the student’s profile below:

Level:

Pre-intermediate, has been learning English for 2 years

Age:

26

Job:

Journalist

Interests:

Action movies, extreme sports, rock music, travelling

Needs English for:

Working on assignments abroad, meeting with

foreign colleagues, socialising, writing e-mails, telephoning.

Skills he wants to improve most: Speaking and listening

Learner style:

Visual

(Note: the information about interests and needs is given to help you ‘get to know’ the student better; you don’t have to use it all in your lesson)

Based on the information above, write a lesson plan for a 45-minute lesson with this student. The topic is Telephoning, and the objective is to prepare the student to communicate over the phone. At present, he finds it difficult to speak with someone without seeing the person and he needs to learn the standard language of telephone conversations (e.g. “I’d like to speak to …, please?”, etc).

Please include the following information:

  • Target language (list the phrases you will teach)

  • Assumed knowledge (for example, list some grammatical structures the student already knows, which can be of use during the lesson)

  • Anticipated problems

  • Solutions

  • Preparations and aids

  • A step-by-step plan of the entire lesson including the timing of each stage. Remember to follow the PPP sequence: from Presentation, through Controlled Practice to Free Practice (Production).

Note: This will be a functional lesson as you will be teaching a language function.

Target language:
Telephone phrases
"I would like to make an appointment please."
"Can i please speak to..."
"Can i take a message?"
"I would like to know what your trading hours are?."

Assumed knowledge
How to use basic vocabulary words. E.g.
Wrong Number
Appointment
Take a message
Open/Closed

Anticipated problems
He may have difficulty with pronouncing the words.
Can't speak clearly over the telephone.

Solutions
Make him use it in a role play scenario.
Make sure he can pronounce the words before you continue.

Preparation and Aids:
Telephone props
Conversation role play/scenario cards
Flash cards

Warmer:
Review previous lesson/homework by playing 20 questions.
t-s 5 min

Presentation - set of context
Introduce student to a list of telephone phrases that are used when speaking on the telephone.
E.g. "I would like to make an appointment please.", "Can i speak to Jack please." "Sorry but this is the wrong number."
Elicit and drill the phrases.
Give the written form (phrases he can use or refer back to if he gets stuck.)
E.g. " I would like to know your trading hours please."
Drill again until he understands the work.
You can make use of a mini role play to demonstrate how to pronounce the phrases as you would in real life.
Elicit vocabulary words - "Appointment, Open/Closed, Supervisor etc"
Give him the written form under the relevant scenario/Flash cards. (role play)
t-s 15 min

Controlled speaking practice
Do a role play scenario with the student. By using the new learned phrases.
Hand your student the flash cards with the phrases on. Arrange the chairs so that it is back to back. By using the telephone prop start a conversation by making use of the flash cards. E.g.
Receptionist (teacher): "Good day, thank you for calling ABC hair studio, how my i be of assistance?"
Client (student): "Good day sir/madam, i would like to make a hair appointment please."
Receptionist (teacher):"Certainly sir, what time would you prefer to come in?"
Client (Student):"I would like for the appointment to be at three pm please."
Receptionist (teacher):"Certainly sir, that won't be a problem."
Client (student) "Thank you, and i will see you at three pm then. Good bye"
Move on to the next one.
t-s 15 min

Freer Practice:
After the conversation ask him if he has any questions or is there anything that doesn't make sense about the conversation(s). Also point out the mistakes he made along the way. Get him to self correct.
t-s 5 min

Controlled Written practice
For practice give him only two of the flash cards. But is has to be different from the one he had done first. The one card has only one phrase written on it, so for homework he must write the other half of the dialogue.
t-s 5 min

Freer practice is another term or description for 'Production', the idea being an activity that utilizes the new understanding acquired from the presentation and what was practiced, given the context of this lesson (i.e teaching someone how to talk on the phone more comfortably...) I would think of an exercise that as closely as possible provides a way to simulate that, so it is like practice, but it assumes a greater knowledge, and therefore something less structured, where the student gets to 'try out' their new found knowledge, again in this context I think of a 'test run' or 'improvisation' for ex.  ;-)  btw I didn't really look at the rest of your answer, but I noticed you have put another controlled practice after the 'freer practice' or production... I might review the sample lesson plans and the PPP order.   hth, good luck

and oh, about the target language, (missed that part ;o) I'd say you've got the idea, you might consider to add as many phrases as you can think of...
