Hi I'm just at the Teaching English one-to-one assignment and I'm a bit stuck on ideas of what I would do if my student 1) feels shy or uncomfortable in a one-on-one situation (the only thing I have here is to ask the student to invite a friend, but what if he or she doesn't have one studying English?), 2) Your student has had a bad day at work/school/home and is finding it hard to concentrate. He/she wants to tell you all his/her problems. You are starting to feel more like a counsellor, 3) Your student expects you to dominate the lesson and do all the talking. I don't think there were any suggestions to correct these problems in the module, am I wrong? Can you help me PLLEEEAAASSSEEE? Thanks |

I am on the same boat. There is nothing in the module that says anything about how to go about these issues. Please let me know if you found anything, and I will do the same if I find anything. Best |

hi guys, i am currently private tutoring in Bangkok, so mostly one on one with difficult students who are not performing at school, so i have been in the very situation you comment on, such a debatable topic the one on one scenario, hope this helps, it is entirely up to you to gain the confidence of the student, you are in command of the situation, sorry if that sounds abrupt, a little humour to break the ice, be firm, be polite, be reassuring, etc, etc at the end of the day you are the teacher, if it becomes a difficult situation then you have to let go of it,
Bill.

I have tried this assignment, however, i was suspected to have plagarism :$$ I cannot believe that the online tutor said that my Question 8 is an exact copy with the stock answer !!! He/She has given me the notice said that if the next attempt has evidence of the plagarism, he/she will ask the director of studies to remove me from all courses without a refund!!! I cannot believe that. My answer is all my work!!! I just want to say that be careful anyway=)

TIPS: do not copy exactly the comment from the tutor, just try to use other words to expand the topic. Now I have given my reason to the tutor, he/she has accepted it. Finally, I have passed the Teach one-to-one module. If you need my help about this module, just let me know. Also, I have passed the ONLINE TEFL course and 20 hours grammar. so any questions ,I would like to help with.

1) feel shy or uncomfortable in a one-to-one situation I probably guess this student doesn't really have a lot of confidence, so to build up his confidence is important. You can design some games to ask him to join in and learn in a relax environment. 2) for this situation, I think the best way is to be a listener, and try to adapt the lesson in order to meet their students' needs. 3) for this situation, I think you may ask the student to be a teacher, change the position or change the environment of the study, such as go to the cafe shop to have a talk . Or to adapt the lesson which is meet the student's interests/needs. |
