The most popular gambling city in America and perhaps the world is Las Vegas. Located in the middle of the Western desert, this city is a unique place where the main attractions are the many casinos with their non-stop gambling machines and nightclub entertainment.
The gambling covers a wide range of games from roulette to slot machines and black jack. The foreboding element and danger of risk is ever present. A person may lose a little over a long period of time or a great deal all at once. Such is the uncertainty of gambling. A careful gambler will never lose more than he could afford and a lucky gambler may walk home with a jackpot. Most would be happy if they just broke even.
When one tires of these games of chance, the gambler may enjoy the many nightclubs which are part of the casinos. Featuring some of the nation's most famed entertainers, they provide a necessary distraction and offer a moment of relief from the tensions of the gambling tables. For those who may have suffered great financial losses, they offer temporary consolation before the long trip home.
If one cannot afford to travel out West, then there is a gambling center in the eastern part of America which offers a similar outlet to those who wish to try their luck with fate. The East Coast "Las Vegas" is located at Atlantic City in New Jersey. Instead of being located in the desert, it is found on the windswept white sandy beaches of the great Atlantic Ocean.
Often in the streets which feed into the gambling districts, there are many pawn shops for those who have sold their earthly possessions to wager a bet or who need money to compensate for their losses.
In recent years the popularity of gambling once confined to Las Vegas and Atlantic City has extended to other states especially along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Following suit several other states have chosen to legalize casino gambling with the hope of acquiring revenue to fund domestic programs. The once pristine and secluded beaches in many southern states are now alive with the lights and lure of the casinos. These casinos have begun to attract many gamblers worldwide to their shores.
Although the excitement of gambling can provide much fun, it's possible to lose a great amount of money at the casinos and some people often do. There is a growing fear among some people that gambling can be a social disorder which breaks up families and lives. If someone feels they are a compulsive gambler, they are advised to seek help through Gamblers Anonymous.

Hey!

Pristine is a word, it's an adjective. However, it is a word the students will have difficulty with as it's not a word that they would come across very often.

You are on the right track with the question. You should look at the module notes. They helped me. It's your own call really. What words do you think the students would have difficulty with, taking into consideration their level?

I also listed foreboding and pristine in my answer.

You need to keep in mind that the students may know some of the vocab through the context of the reading.

You don't necessarily need to write after each word why you chose them but write a summary underlining the general reasons you chose those words.

yes i no its a word, did not finish after pristine-not a word ...........Fantastic  thought i had to write after each word.Does the fate make sense?

If you want, and you can, then give a reason after each word. I didn't and my answer was accepted.

Hmmm I'm not sure about fate...I guess you could give it a shot though. I'm not sure using the synonym would explain it any better as the sentence already contains the word 'luck' so if you explain 'fate' using the synonym 'luck' it would read 'those who wish to try their luck with luck'...that's not what matters here though. You can just list fate as one of your words to pre-teach and leave out the synonym part. You can then go on to list your reasons for choosing all the words.

yeah the reason is what i dont get...they need to be taught them as at this level they wont understand there meaning....is that all they want to hear

London_033_medium AlannahBoland 44 posts

Yeah..how often would the students come across some of the vocab in daily conversation? probably very rarely, if at all so you need to consider that. Foreboding for example, how often would you or I even use this? Same with pristine and broke even...just consider it along those lines. I think you know what you have to do but your just nervous it's not what they're looking for. I'd go with your gut instinct.

Yeah that's a legit reason. Some of the vocab is not familiar to the class at that level. try and think of some other reasons too. maybe even on or two more.

I don't think it matters if they come across this in conversation or not at this moment.  Obviously when you're teaching you choose material that is relevant, however, knowing vocab is never a bad thing.... if they have to take exams you have no control over the content, so they need to learn how to make a reasonable guess at the meaning of a word from the context.  Also - it's not necessary for them to understand every single word, only the ones that relate to the questions!  They may like reading or watching films in English, in which case they may come across all sorts of stuff.  But mainly, this assessment is to prove that you can teach the material put in fron of you.  Ignore these details and teach the lesson.... you need to prove to the tutor that you can do it, that's the nub.

I used your advice guys to help through this exercise but what I find hard is students' levels. It's not very clear in the modules and I can't decide what level is for this Gambling exercise. If anyone has a clear explanation of the levels, i would appreciate it. thanx a million
