I would like some help on this assignment
Question 5
Click here to read a lesson plan for a class of young learners and imagine you are giving the next lesson to the same class. Your aim is to teach the following set of new double letter sounds:
ai as in sail ay as in tray ir as in girl oa as in boat
Write a lesson plan according to the same model. The time and level are the same and your aims will be to teach a new set of double letter sounds. Please use as much as you can from the different parts of this module and include a varied range of activities.
MY ANSWER:-
Lesson 2 Aims: To go over the work from the previous lesson To introduce an additional set of double letter sounds to build on their previous lesson (ai , ay , ir ,oa) Use a wide range of activities to practice the target language
Target Language: Four additional double letter vowel sounds (ai , ay , ir ,oa)
Level: Beginner
Time: 55 minutes
Assumptions: The children in the class are familiar with all the phonics and have had practice putting letters together to form three letter words.
The class have already been introduced to double letter sounds.
Anticipated Problems: Correct Pronunciation: - The children may not have picked up on the nuances of the pronunciation of double letter sounds. Especially the glides (semivowels) /j/ as in ay+/j/ and /w/ as in boa + /w/ + t “ir” is and exception (not regular) It has various different pronunciations.
Solution: Drill the children using 4 letter words and do some rhyming exercises keeping it fun and happy for the children.
“ir” would be a case of getting the children to pronounce the whole word and memorise the pronunciations.
Revision 1. Review: - Use a substitution exercise on the board encourage the class listen to me pronouncing the double letter sounds (ee, ea, oy, ar) Example:- I write on the board “L _ _ P ----- EA” I would say EA the class would repeat back leap Production - I would get the children to do some open pair work awarding points to the best pairs for pronunciation
2. Present video (*1) This video has some outstanding graphics, which I will voice over it, to give the correct pronunciation as the original has been done with a bad American accent.
3. Controlled practice Repeat video and ask the children to join in, encouraging and proffering praise at all times.
4. Presentation: - Vocabulary building. Start drilling the class with flash cards and a bit of miming to keep the interest of the children Here is an example of the words I would use. ai = Maid Wait Paid ay = Spray Say Day ir = Fir Air Dirt oa = Goat Toad Coat
5. Controlled Practice:- Continuing from the previous drilling I will begin to putting the pictorial flash cards up all around the class room . I would get the pupils to point to the correct flash card
6:- Production :Game :- Once all the flash cards where up I would split the class up into small groups and hand each group the 4 vowel pairs the group that can correctly get all the their vowel pairs under the correct pictures will win.
7. Controlled practice :- the checking of the vowel pairs from the previous game can be turned in to a fun class activity with some points awarded for spotting mistakes.
8. Production:- Game
. On the white board I would write out 2 lists of words missing the vowel pairs . Then I would divide up the class into 2 halves. . Demonstrate to the children by walking quickly to the board filling in a vowel pair . Line up the children give the first member of each team a marker. . Shout “GO!” and start a 3 minute timer at same time. . First from each team runs up to board and fills a vowel pair . After handing the marker to next in line he/she will run to the back of line. . The winning team after 3 minutes is the one that has completed most words correctly.
9. Controlled practice checking game results
10. Presentation drill with flash cards the new double vowel sounds learnt to day (ee, ea, oy, ar)
11. Pruduction: - Get the children to write in their books the new vocabulary learnt today.
12. Homework:- draw a line under each of the vowel sounds of the words that they have just written in their books.
*1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o84ndBQU6vQ&NR=1 Teacher’s notes:- ** ee and ea are the same sound** ** ea and ee it has an invisible y sound indicated by j (phonetically)** ** ar the “r” is silent and the “a” is over emphasised E.g. Start shout be pronounced “Stat”** ** oy not to mixed up with oi e.g. Toy and Toil** **”Said” is and exception and should be taught at this time** **“ir” should not be taught as a vowel pair in my opinion**
The question I have is a followed the layout so where did I go wrong
Thanks in advance.
Eugen

I'm sorry but you definitely haven't followed the sample layout! Your plan is too confusing – you've got three 'controlled practice' stages and three 'production' stages! You've also got some of the 'controlled practice' before the 'presentation' – they can't practise what you haven't presented! Re-write your plan using the stage names from the sample lesson plan.
