Hi! Has anyone been to Mexico, or better yet, has anyone used their TEFL certification in Mexico? |

Hi, I've been to Mexico and absolutely loved it. Not sure why but I just love the language and the culture. I am currently looking for a teaching position there. Best of luck to you! |

I lived in Mexico (Mexico City) for a few years, commuting back to my home here in the US every few months. I traveled to many places in Mexico, loved it! The people are quite nice. Restaurants are hidden treasures - many fabulous ones that on the outside would lead you to expect otherwise. Where in Mexico are you planning to go? |

I don't have any specific area in mind at this time. Of course it would be nice to be near the coast, but what's most important is the quality of the school. Right now I am back teaching at a private Korean school here in Surrey BC. It has made me realize that it's probably best for me to get another year of experience before heading to Mexico. There are so many positions for teaching ESL here in the lower mainland of British Columbia. Finding a job is extremely easy, so this is a great place for someone simply seeking experience. I have talk to the owners of the school about going to Korea, where there is also a great demand for good teachers. So much so that the plane tickets, and accommodations are almost always part of the compensation package. They expect you to go over for at least six months, so it's a big decision for me. I may just give it a try, but my ultimate goal will always be to teach in Mexico. Good do hear from you. I hope that all is well there. |

MichaelK .. Please tell me more about teaching in British Columbia ... as you indicate, "(t)here are so many positions for teaching ESL here in the lower mainland of British Columbia. Finding a job is extremely easy ..", (unless I have misinterpreted something). I have been trying to justify completing a more extensive TEFL qualification, however, I stall wondering about the bonefide of the courses, thus the realistic prospects of accessing teaching opportunities. I would absolutely welcome the opportunity to teach and reside in Canada ... even, if only for a period of time. I this could be facilitated I could justify following-up on gaining a TEFL qualification to supplement the training/tertiary education and life experience/s, inclusive of having taught as a secondary teacher. Yes .. experiencing Mexico would be something to look forward to also .. so good luck with that. Then, I'd say, it isn't luck you are needing; as much as it is to establish the basis of a network. Thus, I trust others are forthcoming. This being as it is ... I would appreciate hearing further from you ... Thank you, and .. cheers, Don |

Hi Don, My life actually took another turn in the musical direction so I will have to put off my plans to teach in Mexico indefinitely. In regards to the availability of teaching positions here in the lower mainland of British Columbia, it is true, there are many. The Greater Vancouver area is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Canada. Every day immigrants from other countries come to live here and they are all looking to learn to speak English. There is particularly a large amount of Korean immigrants in my area that are all very keen to learn English. If you are personable and know how to promote yourself, you would have no difficulty finding a job teaching English here. I only have one year of university and an i to i TEFL certificate and getting a job proved to be extremely easy. I am pretty good at promoting myself though, and I think that is the key. If they like you and you present yourself well, it seems that the resume or CV as they call it... is somewhat irrelevant. Best of luck to you, and let me know how things go! |

Hi Amritesh, Most people arrive and start by teaching English to executives. The money is okay but it is a lot of travelling around the city and can be a little lonely. If you are looking for a fulltime teaching position in a school you could try ASF, Churchill, Greengates etc. but these require a teaching qualification. Send me a message if you'd like some more ideas! Saludos de DF!

Hey Everyone!!!
I just finished my certificate and I am starting to look for work in CUERNAVACA, Mexico. I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on exactly how about going to contacting schools and if anyone has a good basis for a cover letter. I know this was covered in the course but it wasn't covered extensively and if anyone has had any success or any advice it would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to start work in about three months and would like to start the process as soon as possible so with any luck I can try and obtain a working visa before hand. But if not it's not the end of the world. Thanks sooooo much in advance. I am feeling a bit lost at the moment. :) |
