TEFL makes my brain hurt!
Well most companies require at least 120hours. I've met plenty of people with TEFL qualifications who are out there doing it - so yes it is possible!!! As I say it's just a matter of where you are applying for. You will find most countries in Europe easy to find work in - such as Spain and Italy. France is always difficult even for newly qualified CELTA people. I'm not sure about latin america as I haven't worked there I'm afraid! A lot of people do the TEFL first, see if they like it and then later do the CELTA if they want to make a career out of it. Let's face it there is a bit of a price difference! But definitely have a look around at what's available before deciding.
Hi there,
It really depends on where you want to go and how long you want to teach for - different countries accept different qualifications and years experience.
I'd recommend researching into jobs first of all on TEFL.com and eslcafe.com and see what you need for the countries you want to teach in. If you do wish to make a career out of TEFL, it may be better to do the CELTA. However if you want to teach for only a few years then do one of i-to-i's courses. It really comes down to how much you want to spend. You can get a lot of jobs with our qualification, but of course you will need to search for the right job for you.

Tess (Teoc) is right.. we are all very supportive. Welcome to the world of teachers. Even as I leave my one week in Ukraine after a very horrible experience and situation, the teachers were the ones to support me and help me through it all. Not the school or admin. They are still helping me figure out last minute details like getting to the airport and such just in case my admin won't (the picked me up frm the airport). Just remember, teacher stick together. We all know what it's like.. And it starts when learning.. everyone here if they are true to what they want to do will be more than helpful.
Good luck with everything!!
hi everone, its so interesting reading what you all want to do! I spent my 20s travelling Asia and Europe and loved it, spent a year in Australia and New Zealand. Now i would like to move to Singapore with my 5 year old son as we have some family there, but as its just me and my son i am a bit scared and know there would be alot to organise. Ideally would love to get a job teaching which is why im looking into doing the TEFL course but still deciding which one is best! Also I only have a Diploma not a degree so a bit worried about this also. Any info you guys could give me would be great!!
Your right it is a bit confusing but its exciting to coz its all new, I've found everyone on chalkboard helps one another and if you need help there's always someone to ask and people will help you out, you only have to ask, you'll be grand once you get into the course and it all comes together, then the fun part deciding where to go to teach.........
I am in your boat! I am going to Thailand in October, but haven't even started my course work.... YIKES! I am doing the 120 hour certification. I am also just doing the 5 month internship just to get a feel. Best of luck!
Hi Glen, Welcome to chalkboard. Im doing the 140 hour combined TEFL course, its 120hours online and 20hours in class, I plan to go travelling in 2011, not sure when or where yet. At the minute Im reading through various people's blogs or joining groups on chalkboard and finding out information from them on the different countries to teach in etc, (im finding its the best way) and its so great getting to know people from all over the world who have the same interest to teach and travel, talk to ya. (:D)
