what would give you a better chance at a job really?
i know some schools arent even bothered about a tefl but if i was to go down that route, what would be the best footing for me?
can i do it all on line?
i'm a bit lost can you tell?
Gemma
Chalkboard is i-to-i's TEFL community.
It is currently still in testing phase which could mean you find the odd bug!

Im actually finding the course a little harder than i thought i would! Its quite disheartening. Is that just me? I'm doing the 20hr grammar extra at the mo and WOW my mind aches afer a few hours of going through it all!
Guys am I just thick? ergh :(
Weekend course im booked onto is mid October Hoping this will make more sense by then....
do the weekend course - you can actually see how it all works in real life - ive just finished the 120 hour course (not sure where the 140 hour comes from?!), with only 6 hours to spare - woops! the online stuff is good, but the worth of the weekend course is more than 20/120 ;)
Hey Gemma,
I'd say the weekend course is definitely worth doing - just for your own knowledge and confidence with teaching, as it'll give you a chance to plan and deliver your own lessons. In terms of employers, 120 hours is the industry standard so you shouldn't have any problems finding work, but you'll probably feel better prepared if you have a bit of classroom experience.
Good luck!
Another suggestion i would add is to do the 40 hour combined (20 hour in class + 20 hour grammar study).
It seemed like quite a few students in my weekend course were only interested in getting their in-class teaching certificate. A few keeners had enrolled in the 100hr+ combined courses, but those people were surprisingly in the minority.
Of course, you'll get more comprehensive study with the 100+ hour course options. In terms of job potential, it really depends on where you plan on teaching. Since I plan to teach in Europe, I opted for the 140 combined, but i've also heard some countries are interested only in university/college degrees.
There are tons of choices out there. Good luck and keep us posted!
The 140 hours is usually a combined course- you do 120 hours of work online and then you have a 20 hour weekend course.
I'm doing the 140 hour combined and I'm really enjoying it so far. The online work is really engaging and I did the weekend course last week and it was really good- it really made me feel more excited about TEFL and it was great to meet other people who were interested in doing it too. I think you'd really miss out if you didn't do the weekend aspect.
For me, I simply did the 140 hours because it seemed very little price difference with the 120 and as I have no teaching experience I thought every little could help. But go with your gut instinct is my advice. And good luck!
