Hey all.
Well i have been back in the UK for 3 months already and i am hating everyday of it. Its such a big change after 6 years living in Thailand (i worked for a large hotel there). I know that my life is not for the UK, i love being immersed in the cultures and languages of southeast Asia, and can't wait to get back out there, wherever it will be.
So i have now started my TEFL online and submitted my checkpoint one, it actually made me feel quite stupid as it took me a while to do. I wanted to make sure i got it right so kept going through it all again and again until i was happy. Now i am just waiting for the feedback and i am scared. LOL. It's like being back at school waiting for exam results.....and this is only checkpoint one.
Hopefully it will be satisfactory and i am worrying about nothing. Its all new to me, i have always wanted to teach but i never got round to it. So plenty of reading, absorbing and learning for me over the next few weeks.
How did everyone else find the online course? Did you find it confusing at the beggining?
I am hoping that once i have gained my TEFL i will be able to get back out to southeast Asia and try something i have always wanted to do. I already feel like i am taking so much on board, and its actually fun.
I'm interested in finding out where your TEFL has taken you to in this world.
Oh well, i suppose i should continue my learning for tonight, and do plenty of recaps incase i dont make the grade for my checkpoint. *bites fingernails*
Goodluck with your TEFL and teaching, and i hope to meet loads of new people in the same boat as me.

Whiskeykitten, do the checkpoints when you feel ready to do them. Don't pressure yourself to rush in to them. Although i found parts of it puzzling, it all soon made sense to me and i got there. I think the 1st one is the worst one to do when starting out on this because you don't know what to expect. I was quite scared to start the 1st checkpoint too, but when you are doing it the answers will come to you quite easily. If you need any help or clarification i am about to help most of the time. (though i am far from an expert on it all)
Goodluck with it, i'm sure you will do great. =)
I'm not surprised! Have you got a deadline on the German? Seeing as most Germans can speak such good English, can't it wait a bit? I found more info in the resources and on you-tube than the PDF, although they're good to have open whilst working. I think it must have changed recently, mine weren't called checkpoints.
Check out English With Jennifer, especially on the pronunciation one (really helpful you-tube video under Jennifer ESL), she does a website and you tube - also Bridge TEFL and One Stop English are useful. Remember you've got the helpdesk, and is it still 3 goes at an assignment?
I think with the early ones - motivation and classroom management and stuff, you have to take in what you learn but also remember that lots of it you can only really learn on the job, and the tutors understand that.
Don't stress about the grammar, it comes to you when you stop stressing and get your head in the right state. It's only putting names to things you do all the time without thinking.
Can you set yourself targets, like every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 til 9.30 I will set aside for TEFL?
I have had plenty of time myself but tons of stress this winter. Now I'm penniless and I've got to give up everything, try to get about £3000 by June, and move to Ecuador on my own, so I know how you feel by overwhelmed! But we're here to encourage you :)
I have reached my Checkpoint one... but I am too scared to start it! I don't want to fail anything!
I "keep meaning to" go over the PDF summaries for each section before attempting it, but I am just not finding the (courage) motivation right now.
I keep reminding myself that I have a deadline, but I just keep making excuses.
I work very long hours and I get home exhausted - mentally drained - and I just cannot bring myself to "think" any more than the bare minimum before bedtime! It's sad, really.
I am also trying to learn German at the same time.
i think I might have bitten off more than I can chew.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed.
I know what you mean - I found on-line learning really hard as it's impossible to know how well you've done until you get feedback. I used to spend ages on all my assignments and then get good marks, thank goodness! I found number 1 fairly easy but it's still worth taking your time over. Just remember, it does get much more challenging towards the end, especially on the extra modules, and you do have a time limit. When you start having to write a lesson plan it gets really time consuming so try to plan for that.
My advice is this - if there is anything in your assignment that you are really not confident with, write a specific note about it to the marking tutor. I found this really helpful, as it makes them aware that you are thinking about that point, and they can give you feedback that teaches you something. I always passed first time but still got some useful tips. Good luck.
Well done! Onwards and Upwards...
Yay, apparantly i done it spot on and got lots of good feedback, excited about the next step now. was worrying about nothing.
Good Luck! It's gets easier...
