Step One

So, I took the plunge and started signed up for the 140 combined course :D

I'm a couple of weeks in and so far so good. I thought I'd really messed up the first assignment but I got really positive feedback so I was really pleased. Grammar I'm less happy with but I'm hoping that when I properly get to the grammar awareness course, that will be a big help and when I'm less impovrished I am definately buying a grammar book! It's strange that something that you take completely completely for granted can be so complex. I'm also realising that to make the course worth while it is definately necessary to read around.

Today I was learning about phonemic script- how useful have other people found this in teaching? I found it a bit hard to get my head around. I suppose that I'm a visual learner because I found it understood it much more clearly when I'd written down each symbol and 'written' the sound it related to rather than listening to it. At least I'm learning something.

I'm looking forward to the weekend course the week after next as well. I was surprised that there was one so close to home as well but very pleased about it. If anybody is doing the weekend course in Plymouth on the 14th and 15th feel free to say Hi :)

It's nice to have something to focus on. I've got an interview for a promotion at my very rubbish supermarket job but the plan is to use it to save money to then go abroad and inflict my brand of english on some poor unfortunate souls.

So far, so good.

I hear you!  I just started the 140 combined course as well and have reached the "dreaded" phonemic script module.  It's really surprising that after probing through dictionaries for so many years, I never bothered to take a moment to learn this universal language.  At first glance, it looks like some kind of HTML offshoot. I feel as if I am learning a whole new language from scratch.  I also wonder if any teachers have actually  incorporated phonemic script successfully as a way of teaching pronounciation.

Hi,

Grammar is a whole new world when you start delving deeper isn't it! I found the best thing to keep in mind is at least your learning it all now rather than being stumped in front of your class. Learning it all just means that you are armed to answer and help your students no matter what weird and wonderful questions they ask.

You'll love the weekend course! Keep us posted on how you get on.
