Meet Alison Horne from Cumbria who’ll be Jetting off to Thailand in September to live the TEFL life…
What first attracted you to TEFL?
The idea of being trained and having a qualification I can have for life really appealed to me. Travelling is something I’m really passionate about. I’ve previously worked at summer camps in America and thought teaching English would be a great extension of this as well as giving me the opportunity to use my degree in primary education outside the traditional setting of the state schools I’d been used to in the UK.
What were you doing before you decided to live and work in Thailand?
I was studying primary education at Leeds Metropolitan which I absolutely loved but getting up at 5.30am to catch a bus to the schools I was placed at was exhausting! I thought TEFLing would be a perfect way for me to carry on enjoying my passion for teaching but in a different setting.
I know a few people who have been travelling to Thailand and seeing their pictures of white sandy beaches and blue sky’s was enough to persuade me to think ‘why not!’
What do you want to achieve from your time TEFLing?
On a professional level I hope to boost my C.V but I’m mostly looking forward to the freedom of planning my own lessons to suit the needs of my class, something which isn’t always possible in the UK due to tightly scheduled curriculums.
I also plan to travel around Asia when my contract ends, something which would have taken me ages to save for if I wasn’t teaching first- there’s only so many tables you can wait before you think ’lets do this!’
What will you miss/ happily wave goodbye to at home?
Hmmm I’d have to say I’ll miss my friends and family most. I’m also missing my cousins wedding (ooops!) I’d happily wave goodbye to the weather and the décor of my childhood bedroom I’m currently living in!
Any last words?
What the heck do I pack!?
