I am 20 from Australia. I know I need a TEFL obviously.
But what about university degree?
I only have a 18 month Diploma in Community Services Work (counseling, social work etc) which I studied at TAFE.
I was planning on going to uni next year but I'd prefer to spend 5 months in Japan, since spending 3 weeks there last year I have been so eagar to return.
I've read online some schools accept TAFE/College students but most require a degree, then some say you MUST have a degree to teach English. I'm so confused.
If I can't teach English what other work could I do? I have loads of experience in hospitality, I could also be a hostess?

As Briona said "you DO need a degree!"
The reason for a degree is not for teaching but for the visa.
Working Holiday Visa - the working holiday visa does not permit teaching - it is for season work (such as working in a hotel or at a ski resort)... it permits 6months as a tourist (no work) and then 6months as a working holiday (<-- This means you are limited to kinds of jobs and hours/pay) - on the working holiday visa you are not allowed to work more than 16hours and are restricted to how much you can earn... also many landlords will not accept you and so you struggle to find accomodation!
For Japan - TEFL is only used to make you stand out a little but no company can employ you legally without the correct visa (which you need a degree UNLESS you can get a spouse visa)
By the sound of things - possible vacation work in the high seasons would be best (but employment is short term) - however, usually you need to be bi-lingual too (so, at least an intermediate level of japanese)
Hi there,
You definitely DO need a degree for Japan to satisfy visa conditions. In fact, to the Japanese, a degree is more important than a TEFL certificate.
However, as an Australian, you can get a Working Holiday visa for which you DON'T need a degree. This visa allows you to stay in Japan for up to 12 months and to work for a limited amount of time. I have no idea whether you would be allowed to teach on it though.
To find that out, you would need to contact the appropriate Japanese Embassy in Australia, whose details you can find via the following link: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/australians-overseas/ (click on the first link below the list of Partner Countries and follow the instructions).
To be honest, if TEFL is something you want to do long-term, I'd advise going to uni. After all, the list of countries where you can legally teach without a degree is pretty small and is set to get even smaller in the near future.
Hope that helps,
Briona
