Starting Out

I am a 2008 graduate, in a temporary job at a local college, and I am just starting to send out TEFL feelers to get the hang of what this is all about. I am thinking about asking questions of or to shadow people in the skills department for students of ESOL, there is not TEFL course here. However, at this time I am unable to know what I want out of such a meeting and therefore cannot word an email correctly. Any help greatly appreciated.

The Online course I just started seems interesting and informative, though I have just got to Checkpoint 1. I have also booked on a 20 hour course in Mayfair, London in December (4th/ 5th) Is anyone else here on that one? I will be staying at the YHA central which is a 30 min walk away.

Does anyone know what equipment I need for the training?

Anyone got any tips to find out more, books or whatever?

I have some medical issues (with my voice) and the online course has got me thinking about whether it is right for me... would lack of intonation hinder me or can I compensate for it?

Thanks

Liz

Hi honor,

I think i am looking to get some kind of training i suppose. See how TEFL works in practice? I am not sure about taking time out from life to TEFL so am looking to see how it might be intergrated.

Will I get more information about the timings etc of the classroom course? If i remember from the website the days were quite long, will i need to take food etc?

Thanks

Hi Liz,

Welcome to Chalkboard! With the classroom course, you don't need any materials - you have a coursebook provided. A pen might be good though.

With meeting people at your college, are you looking to find potential students to teach or for some extra training?

Good luck!
