I am a fun loving 26year old Irish girl from Donegal. I love travelling, meeting new people and working with kids. I am currently on a trip of a lifetime. I left home on the 2nd of July 2010 with a one way ticket. ... :) Before I left I comleted my 120hr combined TEFL course in order to travel for as long as possible.
I began my trip travelling Cambodia, Thailand and Laos for 2 months. Then I moved to China to teach for 6months. At the moment I am working in Tangshan in Hebei province and things are great. However I finish my six month contract in 2 weeks and even though it is open for renewal, the travelling world is calling me again so Im off to see a little more of SE Asia for then off to Australia for a year in mid April.
After that Im thinking more teaching in SE Asia maybe Thailand or Indonesia or possible South America. Who knows? That's a long way off yet. Opportunities are endless with TEFL it's great :)

Its so great to hear that China has been a great experience for you, you have done alot of traveling and hope
i can accomplish the same!!:-0) I'm half way through my course and have the weekender in April i cant wait to apply for jobs but i'm still stuck between china and Japan and areas to teach in etc.
Its important for me to be in the rural part of any country i visit so i can adapt to cultural life quicker but not
so rural where there is no civilisation! lol. Wanna be not to far from the school i'm teaching and the main town.
I'm interested to know places in China you would reccommended, start up cost to live in China, Salary?. I love the fact you have three days off work i too wanna travel and make the most of being in a new environment though i'm looking to teaching seeing the world is a big factor for me!
Any info you can offer and tips about living in China i would really appreciate.
Safe Travels on your journey!:-) x
Hiya! Thanks for your message! Ive just started the course itself, how did you find the course and content? Did you alreayd have a degree or anything?
Do you currently teach young people or adults? Which do you prefer? Thanks for chatting, its great to hear how you find teaching abraod! What do you find hardest? Gemma
Hi Elaine,
How's the teaching going so far?
We do have an office here, yes - in Melbourne. But our tutees are mostly doing the course to head off to Asia and beyond rather than to teach here. To teach English in Australia you normally need to have further education in TEFL/TESOL as opposed to non-native English speaking countries. The main accreditation body, NEAS, say that you need to have a degree and a CELTA (which unfortunately is quite expensive) or equivalent. You may be able to find more casual work though and your experience may play a part.
If you head to Melbourne let me know and we can tell you all about the hidden gems here... or pop in and show us all the amazing photos I'm sure you'll have accrued by then.
Thanks Elaine, hope your enjoying the new job and life in Tangshan, look forward to reading your blog. good wishes, Tess

Hi Elaine. It's great that you are going to China! It's such an amazing country with so much to see and so much to do. You will love it there. Personally I would prefer to go to the South, especially Shanghai, Hainan, Shenzhen, etc. coastal cities. They tend to be more developed and the people there will have been exposed to the western culture and lifestyle. You are also more likely to meet other international travellers there. Weather eise the south is much warmer in summer and definitely not as cold in winter. If you like nature, however, the midlands are relatively undiscovered and there are afew beautiful mountains in the An Hui, Shan Dong area. Try to google a bit about China too. If you choose to go to the north, make sure you are prepared for sizzling hot summer, windy autumn, and freezing winter there. The air tends to be dry and dusty and it is very bad for your skin and hair. Make sure you don't go to tiny towns in the middle of nowhere. Being a foreign makes living in China quite difficult as it is, living in the middle of nowhere could totally push you over the edge. You will find many challenges but I'm sure you will have a blast! Your personality will make you popular no matter where you go.
BTW, Eilis and I are planning to go to a Chinese restaurant this weekend. Would you like to join us?
Let me know!
Love.
Kitty
