I'm Ed, 25, grew up in Colchester, Essex. I then grew up some more studying in Norwich, and grown older and barely wiser living/working/studying the last two years in Oxford. I've tried more careers paths than I can remember, struggled with the rigidity of 9-5 so thought I’d give teaching and travelling a go. I have no expectations, but just want some new experiences and to meet new people who share that spirit and see where it leads me.
I'm pretty good humoured and take people as they come. I’m very active and find it hard to sit still for long, unless I've found a good pub to while away a few hours with friends or a book. I enjoy people, music, getting a sweat on, and learning something new. And what am I currently excited about? The 20th August 2010, when I fly out to Beijing to start the China Internship for 5 months. Hopefully some classic times and new friends await.

Living in China can feel really difficult at first (language barrier, bureaucracy etc), but people are so friendly and will be keen to invite you to all kinds of shenanigans - I say never turn down an invitation and just try to get out there and experience things - 5 months will whizz by too fast.
As for teaching, don't be alarmed if it all goes horribly, horribly wrong at first - just focus on your successes and keep at it - it will get easier. Also, Chinese students don't like putting their hands up to answer questions - being singled out seems to make them feel really uncomfortable. On the flipside, they love competitive team activities, where they have to work together to do something the fastest, or the best.
That's all I've got for now - have a great time - am really jealous of all you guys!
Hi Ed, Happy Dragon have got back to me and said they were all booked up! Ive booked the Far East Youth Hostel now, theres a few others staying there. We should still try and all meet up when we get to Beijing.
Nice, I may see you at the Happy Dragon ;)
if not, then definitely on the 23rd! I fly out at 11:30pm tomorrow night.
EXCIITTEEEDDD
have a safe trip mate! hopefully you won't be incarcerated by the time i arrive.... probably best keep your wide-boy Essex antics to a minimum! ;)
I land at 12:30, so its a couple of hours later than you, taxis seem to be fairly cheap so I don't mind meeting up at the hostel if you want? saves you having to wait around at the airport. Happy Dragon seems like quite a big place, theres a bar there though so we could all meet up in there at some point?
Hi mate, Ive just booked myself in at the Happy Dragon, are you still staying there? I should be arriving sometime on the saturday afternoon if you're about at that time?
ps mate: you'd better watch writing stuff like that on my wall... you don't know who's watching!! 8-/
can't believe you're going early... don't have all the fun before we get there!
it's gonna be mint!! we should be fine - we're British talking about the weather is in our genes... get there 23rd so see u then big guy!
Hey man,
It's always nice to know someone shares my nervousness ;) I'm arriving on the same day as you, as for where I'm staying... I'm hoping someone i know will be in Beijing that weekend so I'd be able to follow them around otherwise I don't know yet :P
How much is the place your staying at?
Now then fella, you enjoy that pint! Last night was my farewell to sunny Leicester so i've had all the alcohol i need for a while
It's so close now, exciting times ahead! I arrive on the morning of 23rd, schoolboy error really, should have arrived earlier but hindsight is a wonderful thing! I'm pretty much set tho, move out my house on friday, selling my work van on friday, finish work on weds. thats about me wrapped up, just need to work out how i'm going to fit my life into 20kgs worth of stuff!
Are you all sorted packing wise? Are you taking a laptop as well?
