About Me

I am currently studying a 100 diploma from www.OnTesol.com. I am also very interested in conducting free conversational sessions over Skype with English learners. I enjoy the fact that there is a forum for TESOL teachers and I hope to be in touch with many new people and ideas throughout my career. My background is not in linguistics, but I am looking forward to learning the art of language analysis and teaching. I am interested in how people communicate and how I can contribute to their success in English language acquisition.
I gained this interest from my Bachelor of Science Degree in Botany which used a lot of latin words to describe different plant structures and forms. I learned that to be able to describe something you have to have a system of organizing and classifying objects and actions. This system is what we call language, and interestingly enough, science is a language and a system of using it for a specific, objective, and results oriented purpose.
I hope that someday I may be able to assist professionals with academic english or english for a specific purpose. However, in the meantime, I will review my Englsh grammar and drill it into my head so I can know it enough to teach it. Does anyone know of any other ways that teaching english is employed in the service of the public.

Comprehension without Apprehension

Are their any proven teaching formats for TESOL. Is there a way to teach English to a class or individual in a way that builds understanding without needless vocabulary and/or drills. The thought of drilling students endlessly on vocab is a way to drive one to apprehension. Is there a tendency to do drilling in Asian countries like Japan, China or Korea?

I am new to the TESOL community. I am excited about the many opportunities that may stem from being involved in this organization and teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I hope to have more content available soon to give you a better insight into my interests, skills, and abilities. Stay tuned!
