I am 42yo, single and a degree-qualified mechanical engineer in the oil & gas industry. I am currently "between contracts", living in Glasgow. To further my options for work and travel I am considering taking a TEFL course. Is there anyone out there that can give some TEFL recommendations with my current situation and my old age!

Welcome to Chalkboard! That's great you're thinking of taking a TEFL course - if you're looking to teach abroad you probably want to do one that's 120 hours or more in order to get your hands on the best jobs: http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-courses/combined-tefl-courses-120.html and http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-courses/combined-tefl-courses-140.html would both work well.
Also, if you earn less than 22k per year, you can claim £200 towards your course through ILA Scotland - I'm not an expert on this, but if you give the guys in our TEFL team a call on 0113 205 4610 they'll be able to talk you through it.
Where are you hoping to teach by the way? You might want to check out the groups to find out where's good to go: http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-chalkboard/groups
Good luck with all your plans and if you have any questions get in touch!
I have travelled for a year on a RTW ticket many years ago and my itchy feet have never disappeared since. I waited until I had some savings from working in engineering before travelling so, working and waiting around only made my actual departure date even more special. When I returned I was almost in tears as I had seen so many sights and met so many interesting people. I stayed in touch with many of these people.
It would be my aim to re-kindle a little of that enthusiasm in a TEFL assignment.
