esl vietnam

Well I am in Vietnam. There is heaps of work for esl BUT I dont have a degree so that takes out 75% of jobs. I am not American so there goes 15%more (I find that interesting as most Vietnamese dont like Americans but they understand the accent.). I am not aa woman so there goes the last 10%.

So if you are an Australian, Male without a degree good luck.

However the food is great the beer is cold and cheap and the people are friendly if you dont mind getting ripped off.

I'm finishing an advanced conversation skills book, modified for Vietnam, that you might find interesting. Check out www.compellingconversations.com for free sample of the standard book. The revised version, for Vietnam, will be ready in a few weeks. You might find it of considerable interest.

Hi Eric,

yea I have a few private clients and will be starting a language centre in August. I am in negotioations with several businesses who want their staff trained in English and western culture. So after a slow begining it seems to be going ok. Now In just need to work out how to get paid. LOL.

Have you found some private clients?

Thanks for the comments. It would appear that the government is making it a law that to teach iin schools you must hve a degree. However there are many english language centers here in Hanoi that only require tefl or equivelent. most require experience but it is now the summer seson here and the centers run summer school so in the next few weeks is the best time to get a job. It helps to be here for a few weeks as nothing happens to fast here. Females are prefered for private tuition. It is not a muslim thing just that vietnamese are what we westerers call old fashioned in thier morals. If you do get a start in vietnam talk really slowly I mean really really slowly. Get them to repeat everything back to you 2 or 3 times.

I guess a degree-less South African male is pretty much en par then? As long as there's cold beer though I'd be willing to give it a shot- good enough reason to give Middle East a wide berth.

G'luck mate! As they like to say in your neck of the woods

As far as we are aware you do need a degree to teach legally in Vietnam. As for people being deported in July, I have heard of other countries doing this in the past so it may well be true!

Most places won't allow without degrees for visa purposes unless they specify needing a degree in a specific department.  As for being female, in Vietnam, I do not think that would pose too much of a problem.  Gender has the biggest play in Muslim areas.  They generally only want male teachers.  Good luck though!  You'll find something!!  You might have to find a place other than Vietnam to gain some experience and then hit Vietnam afterward for the long haul.

I guess I would have about the same chance of finding work as you? I am a female, British non degree holder. Or are females more employable than males for some reason? Would I have a better chance just coming to Vietnam then do you think? Everyone I have contacted online in Vietnam has said 'no degree, no way'

Oooh I really want to teach in Vietnam!! I am heading to China in 10 days to teach. I was told anyone working in Vietnam without a degree come july 2010 will be deported...? Thats why I gave up on it. So, is that not the case then?

Good luck in the job hunt! Stay positive and think of the beer!
