My 1st week of teaching by The Lone Wolf of Fenghua

So i've had my first week of teaching and all my lessons have gone really well! In fact i bloody well rocked it! So that was a big relief, fortunately my first 2 weeks worth of lessons is talking about 'me' though which is a subject i know quite well, I may struggle more when the English begins!! I teach 2 year groups age 14-16 over 2 weeks, 12 classes per year group. each class has 50 to 60 students in. I didn't request this age group but now i've got it i quite like it. They can speak a good level of English so they know what i'm waffling on about most of the time. Plus they are quite cheeky and if they try to take the mickey i can take it back and get away with it. I've been going through some major ego building since i've been a celebrity here at the school. They've been saying ohh you so handsome! you have beautiful eyes! you are so cool! I like your style! haha! I've also found i'm constantly being challenged to games of Basketball and 'Soccer' and as a representative of England I cant be seen to be backing down on a challenge so i've had a few games with them at lunch breaks. I beat them all at football but Basketball they've got the edge on me at the moment..but don't you worry.. when they are sitting in their lessons i'll be out on the court getting some sneaky practice in! I'm glad i have something to practice as i'm constantly trying to find things to do to kill time at the moment!! To be honest i'm getting pretty damn lonely now! The kids are great and the teachers have been very nice and supportive but they are all older than me and keep themselves to themselves most of the time. So there is no socialising going on and i'm not just the only foreigner at the school i'm at, I'm the only foreigner in the whole city of Fenghua! Estimated population of over 480,000!! I'm a lone wolf... The lone wolf of Fenghua. I really am like some kind of alien to the people here. But also i'm a bit of a bloody celebrity?! its absolutely mental!! I'm constantly being mobbed wherever i walk in the school, shouted at and waved at and asked for my photo, its crazy! I had been trying to hide in my room till the attention died down a bit but even there i'm not safe from them! The attention does not seem to be dying down any time soon either but at least now alot of them know my name. So i no longer get pointed at and have hundreds n thousands of chinese kids screaming "laowai"at me! Curious to find out what "Laowai" meant i asked a fellow teacher.. it means 'foreigner'!! haha I decided that i need to make the most of my weekends to meet up with other 'Laowai' and so the lone wolf of Fenghua got on a bus for a 2 hour ride to Hangzhou to find a wolfpack......

Hey Danny,

Yes, if you're really not happy then let the team know - this is what you pay for.  I know TTC and i-to-i are working hard to get things sorted for you guys.  I hope things improve...I'm sure you'll be missed from your school by the sounds of things - question is...do you think you'll be able to transfer your celebrity skills to your next school? lol

Hi Emma, know your just being positive and offering some tips. But it is true i payed near on a grand to a big company in i-to-i that sell the program as living in a ''private bedroom in a shared intern house'' So hell yeah i'm a survivor! but i could of just done a TEFL and arranged things myself to be alone. Part of paying alot of money for the internship was that i'd be with other ppl and be able to enjoy the experience as much as possible. When i'm sat in my room or if i was to go for desperate measures i dont feel i'm gettin the full experience i payed for. Saying that tho, i had an email from Rachel the other day and i know the ttc crew are lookin into making changes so hopefully i'll hear some good news soon!

Hey there,

Sounds like you having fun, despite being a little lonely.  I had a similar experience in Italy - I coped by making friends with some of the few people who spoke English in the village I was in!  Can you maybe search on the internet for a language exchange or ask your students if they know anyone who speaks English even!  Desperate times call for desperate measures!  I hope you find a pack, but if not you seem like you're the surviving type!  That which doesn't kill us and all that :-)
