Hey,

I've never had any problems with the insurance I got out here. It's not travel insurance, which is almost impossible to get for such a long period of time as a year, even year long policies generally only cover you for about 60 days straight before you have to return to your home country.

The insurance here basically pays part of the fees if you have to go to hospital. I know a friend who had to have a fairly major operation and although it did cost money, it didn't cause them any problems on the sallary they were on. As for me, I needed a chest x-ray, a EKG, four different pills and potions and some blood and urine tests (which was overkill to my mind, as I'm fine) and it cost me about US$95. It really isn't overly expensive here. An exception would be if you had a drawn out terminal illness but most would choose to go home in that situation, and your visa would not be renewed if that was the case.
