Argh! My post was too long :) Here's the rest of it!
I'm living in Kobe. Is it Tokyo you want to go to? Thats another problem. Like, Kobe is a big city but most of the jobs going are in Tokyo. I didn't look at them though so I don't know what the prerequisites are. www.atomjobs.com have a good range of jobs as does www.gaijinpot.com. There's another website for applying for jobs in Japan before you get here. Not sure of the address, do a little search. But they provide accomodation and sort out visa's for you if needs be.
I hope any of this was helpful. Any questions, let me know. I'll be glad to help in any way I can. Peace :)
Are you hell bent on Japan? The main reason I came here is because my boyfriend moved here with JET. I did TEFL to help my chances. I've been here for 6 weeks and I haven't been able to find much. Most places do insist on a degree. I have an interview on Monday for a sort of tutoring type job. Basically meeting Japanese people in their house/my house/cafe. I have no idea what the hours are going to be like. Probably not great. I'll let you know how I get on once I actually start working.
Some companies look for teaching experience too. (some insist on teaching experience within Japan) As long as you're prepared to do tutor work, then you should be okay. You can get a working visa though without a degree. http://www.ie.emb-japan.go.jp/Working%20Holiday%20%28Info%29.htm They have 400 a year to give out. I don't think they even use all the 400 so getting one at the end of the year shouldn't be a problem. Plus, it's free. The only problem I had was that I was leaving in March for a year but applied in Feb. And because of that, my visa starts in Feb and ends in Feb so really I only have 11 months. So don't apply too soon but also, don't leave it too late. (mine got rejected at the start because of some issue with my health insurance) 99% of companies will accept this visa as a proper visa but you'd find the odd few that say No Working Holiday Visa. But I'd say get it anyway, you've nothing to lose.
