China on hold

Looks like my wish to teach English in China is on hold for the foreseeable future.  I've managed to contract Dengue fever, a not uncommon ailment in these parts.  While it's not life threatening for most, it really takes a lot out of you.

On the other hand, I'm moving forward on plans to teach conversational English in my apartment to some select individuals here in Cali.

Thanks for the support and good wishes Katie.  As with many events in life, my bout with Dengue fever may have opened another door.  My doctor speaks English fairly well albeit it rapidly and with a Spanish accent and has asked me to work with him so he can learn to speak in a more "American" way.

During our conversations I told him that I had an interest in teaching conversational English and he said he is going to inquire where he teaches classes to medical students whether or not there is a place for me there to teach English.

Regards,

Ray

Hi Ray

Hope you recover quickly and can resume your plans for China. Mosquitos love me so I have to extra careful and spend most of my time with the delightful aroma of insect spray - not my choice of perfume!! It was thought I had contracted Dengue fever in Vietnam last year (luckily it was just a really bad virus) so I can sympathise with your symptoms and how demoralising it feels.

Take care

Katie.

Thanks for the encouragement.  Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever, is a virus transmitted usually through a mosquito bite.  Wikipedia has an article about it here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_fever

It took me about 10 days to recover sufficiently to get out of bed and for the first 5 days I had to be given some rehydration through an IV.

Good luck with your Indonesian adventure if you get a shot at it, but watch out for those nasty Stegomyia aegypti or it's cousin the Stegomyia albopicta.  Those are the critters that can really cause some problems in the mosquito world.

Hi Ray

Real sorry to hear you have had to take a raincheck on your plans to visit China. Not sure what Dengue fever is, sounds tropical so how did you manage to get that?

I have been thinking about what I do after Thailand and have been looking at Indonesia again. It seems that I qualify for the job placement service so might phone them and have a chat. I still havent heard from Robert Clarke about the kindie teaching with him - hope he's ok.

Keep smiling and hope your plans for personal teaching go well.

Marian
