Hey, anyone going to Vietnam on the Internship have any specific  Malaria Tablets picked out ? If so what dosage are you considering taking and for how long ? My GP is pretty clueless, hasn't left the country :P

Im taking docycyline..ive had it before in Vietnam and was fine. You take it two days before and you have to take it for 28 days when u get back. No sides effects for me that I know of anyway haha but you have to take it with food or you feel very ill. Ive also had malarone before and no side effects but more expensuive and you dont need them. Ive got a very long supply cos if all goes well I intend tio stay out there and travel for as long as my money will take me!!!

I'd avoid taking them at all if you can.  If it were just a holiday that might be different, but long term, all malaria medication will have side effects that you could do without.  There is a modern type whose name I forget, which is really an antibiotic and as far as I know this is the safest type, but will affect your digestion and you should take another type of pill to regenerate the 'good' bacteria in your stomach.

When I went to Ecuador the WHO map placed my destination firmly in the red zone, but this turned out to be totally over the top - malaria only existed right out in the jungle and nobody took medication.  In any case, it's almost always cheaper abroad than in the UK or USA.

Also, if anyone in your family has epilepsy, you should be much more careful what type you take, and the antibiotic type (the most expensive) is probably the only one you should consider.  I found this out the hard way, so please trust me on it!
