Top idea Baz! I don't have kids at the moment, but I have the problem that even the higher level students still try to translate everything into Spanish, even when they clearly understood the English definition I gave them... which doesn't always work.
I usually then get them to translate their 'Spanish equivalent' back into the most obvious English, and when it's far off the mark they start to get the point. Recently this resulted in a student boldly declaring that the British can't donate blood in Spain because of foolish cow disease, which made me laugh for the rest of the lesson - he listens to my English definitions now!
