art background advantage?

I'm considering taking the weekend TEFL course at I-to-I soon and keep hearing about teaching experience.  Well, I thought about becoming a TEFL volunteer and getting some experience this way in addition to online courses then saving the Weekend seminar for last (In Denver, June).  Plus, I have a fine art background, wonder if I can use my artistic background to help with my teaching, espeically for Japan or China.  Wasn't sure if there's a different attitude towards the arts in these countries.  I said a lot, would love to have feedback.  Thanks!

Hello fellow artist.  :)  I am moving to China in August to teach English.  Maybe we will cross paths.

Becoming a volunteer teacher is a great idea and will really help you when you come to apply for jobs.

Regarding your art background, loads of teachers say that they'd love to be able to draw well - just imagine how great your flashcards will be!

In terms of employers all they'll look for is that you've got a university degree - they won't be especially bothered in what you majored in.

Hope that helps - good luck with your course and keep us posted with how you get on with your teaching experience!
