Hi!
Yeah I live just outside Hangzhou. Go there alot of weekends. Its a cool city. Really easy to get to Shanghai too, especially on the bullet train. The culture you'll work it out when ya there. ;-) . Dont wanna scare ya too much!! Ha. No it is mental. A really strange place. But thats the point of going, to see something different. And it really can be alot of fun!! Shanghai is obviously a massive city and you'll be fine speaking English there cos most people do. Similar with Hangzhou too. In Hangzhou there are lots of other foreigners and English speaking Chinese. But there will definately be alot of times you'll be in situations where you cant communicate with who you want to talk to too. Taxi's, Ordering food and stuff. But you do learn little tricks to get around it..You'll start picking up certain words in mandarin to use. Also (sad as it sounds!)what I do is carry a mini notepad so that Chinese people who do speak English can write things down so you can get by for whatever your doing that day. Your own specialised phrasebook in a way! HA but if you wanna look cooler than me with my silly little book. Alot of smartphones, ipods etc have some cool apps that can translate alot of stuff for ya. You'll Work it out! No worrys!
Yeah I've been to New Zealand before. Loved it! Thinking of going back after China and working for a while. Not in time for the world cup tho unfortunately. Shame really I'm gonna enjoy watchin the All Blacks blow it again. ;-) .
